Description Bernhardi 2012-05-01 14:47:16 UTC
Since OPENSUSE 11.4 + KDE4, mouse connected via USB hangs sporadically.
This occurs apparently mainly during editing work, e.g. of mails in Thunderbird.
Sometimes this happens also in other circumstances that i dont remember exactly.
I can still move the mouse pointer, but i cannot trigge any action with it, e.g. setting cursor
or clicking on buttons or on close-, maximizing-, minimizing buttonds of opened applications.
When error occurs during editing a mail, the text background is colored while moving the mouse pointer,
but i am not able to activate the cursor again at the required test position.
Any other manual activity still seems to be possible.
I still can move select menue items by moving the up/down/left/right position keys.
Further i can invoke the logoff/shutdown selection facility by ALT CNTL Del keys.
This enables me to logoff the KDE session and re-logon.
During logoff i receive a request to save edited content.
The saving can be done also by moving the position keys accordingly.
After logoff (not shutdown) and re-logon KDE4 the mouse is ok.
This workaround works in the most cases, but in seldom cases data are still lost,
when during logoff the text background is filled with color (means "delete it!).
(

This seems to indicate that only KDE4 is involved in this error,
since there is no Kernel startup necessary to remove the problem.
Only logoff/re-logon is necessary..
Therefore i decided to write this error report against KDE4.

Error didnt occur during OPENSUSE <= 11.3.
I use VAIO VGN CS11S with NVIDIA drivers.
Install of NVIDIA drivers from NVIDIS webside does not remove the error.
During error, i also cannot use the "mouse substitute keys" at the laptop.
Also using another USB connection doesn't help.
I use DuaL Boot with Windows Vista.
Error doesn't occur when working with Vista.
In Opensuse 12.1 i have installed KDE4 and (very recently, yesterday) Gnome.
When i have worked with KDE4,thereby handling many actions with Dolphin anf Furefox,
the problem has occured again.
I will look if this problem occurs also when i work with Gnome.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1.I havent found a method to reproduce the error.
2.
3.

See above.
Sometimes data are lost. Therefore the severity of this problem is a little stronger than normal.

Does restarting KDE also restart the X11 server on your system?
Comment 3 Bernhardi 2012-05-07 21:00:10 UTC
Hello,
X11 is restarted after re-logon at KDE:
during re-logon the protocolfile var/log/xorg.1.log is actualized and
overwritten.
This probably means that i have to redirect the errorreport to X11?
I will look into this protocolfile as soon as error occurs again.

Best regards,

Do you mean that just moving the mouse causes artifacts at the position where the mouse cursor is moved? If yes, this comment sounds a bit like bug 299378, in other words, it is possible that your video driver isn't configured to use hardware sprites for the mouse cursor.

It could be a kernel error also, because when X11 is restarted, the relevant device files for the input devices are re-opened by X11.

I suggest to report this bug to the bug tracker of your distribution, since developers there have a broader overview of components involved with the mouse. In case it has been confirmed to be a problem in KDE, please add a comment, or reopen this bug.

Hello,

So far as i remember, following happens:
1.) Mouse still ok. Cursor is at a specific location within the textfile.
2.) Error happens at this cursor position: When moving the cursor from
this cursor position in forward or backward direction, the textline
parts covered by the cursor movement (NOT the whole text!) are filled
with a background color. In normal cases this happens if i press the
left mouse button, just for copy and paste. However in the error case, i
have not pressed the left mouse button before moving the cursor.
3.) Beginning at this moment, it is not possible to localize the cursor
at a different position.

Obviously the same happened during installation of SUSE12.0 via DVD,
just at the moment when i reenter the admin password during the
required password specification. I had to restart the installation.

I agree to redirect the error report to OPENSUSE.
Thanks for your support.
Best regards,
Karl Bernhardi
