Description Aaron Peterson 2012-04-20 12:11:50 UTC
So, I have to disable the plasma-netbook to be able to get kde to work on my netbook. (the netbook interface has many problems, and it's more than just my preferences, not gonna go further into that here, other than I will not use it)

I uninstalled plasma-netbook on my ubuntu 11.10 system. The test was on 4.7.4.. my other computer is not a netbook...

I then took a guess that a new user would not work without it... (Really wish a dialog came up asking if we wanted to use that... "interface" rather than just choose it )

Anyway, All I got was a crash back to the login screen, then on second attempt I just got a background image.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. uninstall plasma-netbook
2. create a new user
3. log into shell to change the password on first login because the change password dialog does not work in Kubuntu 11.10 on first login...
3.log off you main user
4. log in as the new user
5. observe crash, and then try again and observe background image.
Actual Results:
Just a background image.

Expected Results:
I actually expected this from how poorly executed the netbook interface is.

I would have been pleasantly surprised if the plasma-desktop came up.

I'm a bit sorry for my tone, please excuse me because I am getting very tired of the problems with the netbook interface, and I think others are too.

There was a crash, but this might be toned down to major.

It is much more than just a normal bug, because the system is left in an unusable state. The first time I logged into a kubuntu box and the netbook interface came up, I could not figure out how to do anything, so I popped open a shell and uninstalled plasma-netbook. That did not help much, I ended up using all of my command-line powers to startx with a terminal, startkde, and fireup control panel... then I still was stuck, because the place to turn off the netbook interface is hidden deeply in uniquely named sub options.

phew, thank you for listening, KDE is still awesome, and even the tinkering with netbook interface is appreciated, (just not ready for production)

AFAIK this should work now with KDE 4.8.x, could you please test again?

Hello! Plasma 4 was replaced by Plasma 5 four years ago by the KDE community. In that time we have made great strides in stability and functionality. We are closing all Plasma 4 bugs as most of them are no longer applicable to the new frameworks Plasma 5 is built upon. If you could, please re-test with the latest version of Plasma 5, and submit a new bug to "plasmashell" if you continue to have an issue. Thank you!
