there is option in menu in configure->account. You can select "check new mails at startup"
Sorry it is there - the popup menue shows up, when you right klick the folder icon in the account area. May be a menuetext is missing in the german translation. (see attachment to comment 2): "Retrieval Options" <> "Empfangsoptionen"
