tried to send about 15 pictures via kipi plugins over my default email application, which is kmail. gwenview crashed.

The crash can be reproduced every time.

It crash in QString when mail agent is invoked through KToolInvocation. Sound like a binary compatibility broken on your system.

Try to install last kipi-plugins 2.5.0...

updated to kubuntu precise pangolion, bug does no longer exist.

Problem is not reproducible with new Send by Mail tool from digiKam core introduced with digiKam 5.7.0. The tool is available everywhere : Image Editor, Album View, Showfoto and Light Table. The items to send by mail can be selected by icon view items selection or by albums selection.
