please more infos. do you use nepomuk ? Do you have process in memory ? (akonadi*) etc.
I confirm this bug in KDE 4.8.3. Nepomuk/Strigi is running and configured in KDE Systemsettings to index files and email. First start of kmail after power up is usually ok. One or two hours later kmail is freezing the user interface. It is even not possible to close the kmail window, but KDE is offering the possibility to kill the process. I have the same problem. I have Nepomuk enabled and enabled for indexing e-mails. Starting other pim-related applications (akonadiconsole) also hangs. Clicking the "Details..." in the "Desktop Search - KDE Control Module" to troubleshoot freezes the dialog.
