Description Valentin 2012-02-24 16:45:29 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.8.0)
OS: Linux

I think, that only a few people really use the keyboard accelerators but they are enabled by default. Why not show them only when needed? There is a nice select box in the KDE settings.

There are 3 options
- Allways show
- Allways hide
- Show when needed

The default setting is "Allways show". I think, we should make "Show when needed" default because it looks better.

Reproducible: Always

Won't do sorry.
Setting the option to "show when needed" basically would make them absolutely not discoverable ...
(meaning: new users would never find them), although I agree that kde applications look better without it ...

Just wondering, how exactly are the keyboard accelerators discoverable even if underlined? The user would still have to know that they need to press the Alt key first. If anything, "Show when needed" makes it more discoverable in my opinion since the underlines then show up when the Alt key is held down, making a connection to the Alt key (it's still hard to figure out though).

Arguments like "I do not know any ..."
are irrelevant, since there are way more people that use kde than the person you know.
Having the accelerators visible make them more discoverable than not having them.
They are also visible in all other widget themes.
I do not want bug reports like "Oxygen do not display keyboard accelerators, whereas plastique does".
So, the bug remains WONTFIX, sorry. Can't make everybody happy.
There is no need to re-opening as "Unconfirmed", because that will not make the default change.
