Description Gunter Ohrner 2012-02-18 13:09:05 UTC
Version: 4.8 (using KDE 4.8.0)
OS: Linux

Gee, that's annoying. :-(

The data loss behaviour I first described in bug 284685 comment 9 just happened again, unfortunately this time with several lengthy manually written emails.

:-(((

Do you think there is any way to get my messages / mail texts back or at least to obtain a list of receipients - there were I few mails waiting to be sent and I cannot remember to whom I wrote. I still know that some of the mails were quite important, so I'd like to get a reminder whom I'll have to write again...

Unfortunately, I've not yet found a way to actively trigger this behaviour.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
Write emails which fail to be sent. I've experienced this behaviour both

a) with emails which were invalid and rejected by the server (due to bug 284685)

b) as well as with valid mails written while there was no network connection and
which were queued using the "send later" feature.
In case b) I suspended the computer a few times and everytime I woke it up
(still without network connection) I got quite a few error notification popups
   telling me about send failures.

The mails will queue up in the local outbox folder, which will be displayed in the folder tree as containing X unread mails.

When I was just about to send my mails, I just quickly wanted to browse the list of pending messages before connecting to the network and sending everything.

So I clicked the outbox in the folder tree view to see the message list.

Actual Results:
Just as it happened before I wrote bug 284685 comment 9, the folder list with all pending messages was displayed and one mail after another quickly disappeared from the view until only one remained.

There still was no network connection at this time!

When I connected to the network and invoked "Send outbox messages", only the one remaining message was sent.

There does not seem to be any trace left of the messages I saw disappearing - they are not in the outbox any more, they are not in the local "Sent Messages" folder, they are not in my IMAPs "Sent Messages" folder and they have not been sent according to my mail server's logs.

They are gone.

Expected Results:
Pending messages in the outbox should not disappear when opening the folder. They should wait and stay there until they are sent.

Ok, remembered the receipients of all mails I had prepared and wrote all messages a second time, so there is no need to find a way to determine the receipients of the lost mails.

This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kmail2 (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.12 or later), it gets closed in about three months.

Cannot reproduce at the moment.
