Description S. Burmeister 2012-02-10 11:13:51 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.8.0)
OS: Linux

This is reproducible with akonadi 1.7.0 and kdepim 4.8.

It seems to apply to all move actions, i.e. filtering as well as deleting (moving to trash). I did not test drag+drop.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use an imap account with a local trash folder and a slow internet connection (or make the attachment bigger).

2. Send yourself an email with a large attachment, i.e. large enough that it takes a minute to download.

3. click on the email in your imap inbox (preview pane switches to "downloading") and press DEL immediately, i.e. delete it while it is downloaded

4. click on a few other emails and delete (move to trash) them as well. They will not be moved instantly but kmail "waits" for the first one to finish downloading.

5. Wait until kmail finished moving all emails, i.e. they are not shown greyed-out in the message list but gone from it.

Actual Results:
Switch to the local trash and click on the email with the large attachment. Here only the headers are shown and the email's content is gone, i.e. no attachment.

Expected Results:
Only filter complete emails.
Comment 1 S. Burmeister 2012-02-14 12:14:24 UTC
Other ways to re-produce:

1. set View > Attachments to Icons

2. send an email with a large attachment to your imap (not dimap) account

3. click on the email in the message list, kmail shows "loading" in the
preview pane

4. press DEL to move it to the local trash while it is still loading

5. select a few other read and unread emails and press DEL, kmail will only
mark them as deleted but the "loading" is still visible in the preview pane
and no message was removed from the message list yet. (your internet
connection must be that slow)

6. open the NetworkManagement plasmoid and click on the checkbox "enable
network", i.e. the one above the "enable wireless network" if you have wifi, to disable the network. This must happen before the first email gets removed from the message list.

7. the network will be disabled and kmail/the filter agent will move all
messages you selected for deletion instantly – without content.

7.1 alternatively the same happens if akonadi/kmail set a resource to "offline" while it is downloading emails for filtering.
Comment 2 S. Burmeister 2012-03-08 11:29:21 UTC
Not fixed with akonadi 1.7.1
Comment 3 S. Burmeister 2012-05-21 18:18:22 UTC
Still valid with 4.8.3 + akonadi 1.7.2

Git commit d64d61b470c56b92294f6adee6d74305a217628d by Andras Mantia.
Committed on 04/07/2012 at 17:35.
Pushed by amantia into branch 'master'.

A biggish refactoring of the filter functionality:

1) Do not take the items from the cache only, as they might be incomplete (especially in online imap case, but not only).
This should fix the body loss bug on spam filtering.(Bug 287752 and similar ones + countless of reports on user list)
Might fix 293768.

2) Download only what is really needed for the filter and add safety checks that
the mail is not modified if the requested part is missing. So far the distinction
was only betwee the body and rest. This should speed up filtering.
Also related to 287752, but should fix also 292283, 288109.

3) Rename qDebug->kDebug + fix some includes

4) The code should also fix the duplicate mails appearing after filtering (some of the duplicates
with empty content), eg. 275233

All bug reporters: in case you still see the bug, reopen the corresponding one.
For the reports that were CC'd, but not closed, please try to reproduce and tell
the result.

So far the bug is fixed on master, but might be backported later to 4.9.

Git commit 8846d44b217108351c35f8afd883f72ee88388ec by Andras Mantia.
Committed on 06/07/2012 at 11:12.
Pushed by amantia into branch 'KDE/4.8'.

Backport part of the filter fix: this is the actual fix, the rest were optimizations and safety checks, but it is difficult to backport.
An unwanted side-effect might be that more data is downloaded than before,
based on the type of filters used.

Comment 7 S. Burmeister 2012-07-09 21:13:19 UTC
Does your fix include manual moving of emails, i.e. move a large email from your imap account to some local folder and interrupt the network connection while kmail is still downloading?
Comment 8 S. Burmeister 2012-07-09 22:11:37 UTC
I applied the patch to kdepim. akonadi is akonadi-4.8.95_20120629-5.1.i586 though.

The bug does still exist.

Still valid for 1.8.0 and KDE 4.9.0+, i.e. including http://commits.kde.org/kdepim/e98937475a7f03e69a3a3c6a4ee67a8d41f027b5
Comment 12 András Manţia 2012-10-13 13:42:32 UTC
Can you test with akonadi master or akonadi from 1.8 branch? The one from the opensuse KDE:Unstable:SC should also be OK.
Comment 13 S. Burmeister 2012-10-13 16:22:38 UTC
If I did not do anything wrong while testing this seems to be fixed with 1.8.1. kmail shows a message that the resource was not able deliver the item. The target folder does not show any empty file and the source folder keeps the email.
Comment 14 Matthias Ansorg 2012-11-04 01:34:25 UTC
Does the fix include the following scenario: moving e-mails manually from online IMAP folder to a local folder, and while they're still downloading, back to the same IMAP folder? (Lost ~1300 e-mail bodies that way, as the mails got overwritten with just their headers, but cannot test the fix as I'm still on KDE 4.8.5.)
