It crashed when I held shift for capital letters while renaming a component diagram in tree view.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
I opened umbrello and tested shift a few more times

and then I tested with different keys.

Actual Results:  
It crashed all the time.

Other keys I found are ctrl, alt, caps lock, page down.
And it also crashes on class diagrams

Expected Results:  
Not crashed

OS: WindowsNT (i686) release Windows XP
Compiler: cl.exe

Are you sure about the version?
umbrello-1.1 was the first version to appear (sometime around 2002.)
I will assert that this has been fixed because
(1) I cannot reproduce the problem
(2) the rename code has been changed heavily, even recently
Please try again with 2.8.1 which will appear in a few days.

If the problem persists then please reopen and attach a backtrace according to
