Description bonne 2012-01-29 08:27:11 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.8.0)
OS: Linux

The device notifier (also Dolphin and others that plug into it) have an option to eject external drives.
For hard drives this option should power down the drive (or at least an extra option should be added to allow powering down).
Other desktop environments including Gnome and Mac power down the drive upon ejecting which is much safer for the hardware.

The tool palimpsest is a reliable tool for powering down drives and I believe the code would be easy to copy.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Plug in USB hard drive.
Click "eject" in device notifier.

Actual Results:
Listen as device continues to hum and watch the LED not switch off.

Expected Results:
The device should spin down and the LED should go into "off" mode (which is a slow blink for my particular drive).
