Description sirherrbatka 2012-01-19 14:42:42 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.6.5)
OS: Linux

PresentWindows can filter windows with keyboard input. desktop grid can't.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Launch desktop gird. Type anything.

Actual Results:
Nothing.

Expected Results:
Filter popups, apropariate window is selected on any of the desktops. Pressing enter sends to this window.

I guess that it would turn KDE more natural since both effects would behave the same.

Also it looks less confusing.

the goal is to finally merge the two effects. Up to then we won't add
filtering support to desktop grid as the effect is already rather complex.

Sounds cool but then indeed this request makes no sense. I'm sorry.

I've taken the liberty to change the status of this bug to confirmed since:
* It's a feature commonly requested by Desktop Grid users;
* The plan to merge the effects Desktop Grid and Present windows into the Overview effect has been abandoned, so these two effects are meant to continue to be maintained and developed after having been recently rewritten.

On bug id=295775, Nathan Graham writes

It turns out the Overview effect won't replace Present Windows and Desktop Grid after all. Instead, Present Windows and Desktop Grid have has been rewritten to use the same modern, maintainable backend technology found in the Overview effect. This fixes approximately a gazillion Bugzilla tickets, too! This work has been done by Marco Martin with:
- https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/2279 (Present Windows)
- https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/2327 (Desktop Grid)

Unless there's still a plan to merge Desktop Grid and Present Windows into one, I believe this feature request should be reconsidered.
