I've reproduced the problem twice.
Kopete version 1.2.0, KDE 4.8.0

Steps to Reproduce:
install KDE4.8.0

kopete system tray icon doesn't appear. other icons like kmail and kmix do appear, only kopete doesn't.

Oops, it's there, but hidden in 'Show hidden icons' window
Go to System Tray Settings and in Entries tab set Always show Kopete.

Still a minor bug - shouldn't be hidden by default, but shown.

I'm on kubuntu and also for me it's there but hidden in 'Show hidden icons' window, as #5.
So maybe it's System Tray Settings minor bug.
