Bug 286568 says it affects several KDE applications, but also happening on F16.
Sorry for having filed a duplicate bug. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=286568 A temporary solution for this bug, in my case, was switching to the nouveau driver. Maybe this issue is only affecting system which make use of the nvidia proprietary driver. Now applications start and run as they should. Here's some infos about my system. I hope this will help! adjusting summary to hint at nvidia/libGL link
Oh ... Would that mean this is a new incarnation of bug 251719 which already plagued openSUSE users? :/
OK...but I switched to nouveau drivers (correctly!) and the crashes continue making KDE unusable. Have it on three different machines with same results. All with nvidia cards. I switched to nouveau by removing all the rpmfusion rpms and building a new kernel image with nouveau driver. lsmod only shows nouveau as well as examing of xorg.log file. Crashing are kde-plasma, kded4, krunner, kscd, kmix,,,,almost instantly after login ending with a black screen,
umar, can you provide a new backtrace in the absense of nvidia drivers/libs?
I will try tomorrow morning. I should also say that KDE 4.7.3 on my laptop with HD3000 graphics is rock solid (Fedora 16 of course).
Rex, I installed all the debug packges but most crashes still come with no useful debug information. Perhaps because the crashing daemons are used by the debug reporter. When I ask it to install debug symbols it lists many packages saying they are at the latest version. Many many crashes of: plasma-desktop kded4 nepomuk backend runner I captured one kwin crash with backtrace and submitted to kde and they immediately responded by saying it was nouveau: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=287163 If you have any ideas I appreciate as I could not work for three days so far because of these crashes. What other graphics card I can buy? Is there an intel one for desktop machines? I am not doing games etc just physics with a little 3d support. Thanks
what's the output of: ldd /usr/bin/plasma-desktop | grep GL ?
# ldd /usr/bin/plasma-desktop | grep GL libQtOpenGL.so.4 => /usr/lib64/libQtOpenGL.so.4 (0x0000003fa4c00000) libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib64/libGL.so.1 (0x0000003fa3000000) Also, # rpm -q -f /usr/lib64/libGL.so.1 mesa-libGL-7.11-11.fc16.x86_64
and, to verify it's not been modified, rpm -V mesa-libGL (esp if one used nvidia's installer). otherwise, it's a mystery, something I've not been able to ever witness or reproduce myself
rpm -V mesa-libGL returns nothing.... I know what you mean. I have been upgrading via yum always since the systems are heavily customized with my application packages. I also run this as me mail server, web server etc., It will take me a whole day to put everyhing back that I need but I may have to. I just updated an older nvidia system from the F16 DVD and it has not shown a crash yet. I will report back if the clean install solves these problems. Thanks, Umar
One new idea...I found these bugs that to UpnP causing KDE crashes. I am getting hundreds of these messages as soon as I login (only on the machines that are crashing!). How do I turn this service off? Thanks, https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259472 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259377
News... Sort of... 4x Updates later and everything appears to be working. Tried all the apps, etc. that were broken and they all worked without issue. Been using Gnome in the meantime so I didn't check as often as I should have... Sorry. 'Course I had some down time and thought I'd play a few minutes of video games and now wine is broken. I suspect there is definitely a Nvidia problem. But, I'll head over to winehq and see if they have any solutions. Didn't really wanna play any slash and burn anyway.
Rex, the problems are RESOLVED COMPLETELY by turning off UpnP...I recompiled kdelibs after removing herqq packages and now I have a very stable KDE environment. The question is why? I have installed fresh F16 on one of my older machines on the same netork that was having the same problems and that one is not spewing those upnp messages. Something different in networking between a fresh install and an upgrade but so far I could not find the difference. By the way, nvidia just relased 290.10 which claims to solve the glibc conflict problem. I may try that too.
The new nvidia drivers are also working with no problems!
It looks like the firewall may be the difference between fresh install and update of my machine. I have static ip machines that do not have firewall. If this problem is not fixed in KDE I would recommend turning it off until it is. Thanks
OK, sounds like umar's problem is something altogether different, related to some bogosity wrt to solid/upnp (I'll go hunting for open bugs...)
ok, looks like bug #259472 is where most of the action is lately wrt libsolid/upnp

fwiw, fedora only ships nouveau officially (no nvidia binary drivers, except from, say, 3rd parties)

Are you looking for the RPMFusion RPM Version or the Nvidia Driver Version. The Nvidia Driver Version that is working is 290.10 I'll have to wait till I get home to find the RPM Version. Tho I would assume that it is the latest version posted there. T

For bug 288034, # rpm -e nvidia-settings xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-290.10-1.fc16.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-290.10-1.fc16.i686 kmod-nvidia-3.1.1-2.fc16.i686-290.06-1.fc16.3.i686 kmod-nvidia-3.1.1-2.fc16.i686.PAE-290.06-1.fc16.3.i686 seemed to fix the problem.
Confirmed by many duplicates: the problem is with the NVIDIA driver, not much we can do about that.

Update - had a Fedora 16 package update this morning and now DigiKam is working again (as is Google Chrome which had a similar issue). Still using the same NVidia driver (290) under which DigiKam was crashing. Kernel updated to 3.1.5-1.fc16.i686.PAE. No other packages look relevant, though I can post that if needed.

I use 2 systems, one with a Gforce 9500 and one with a GTX460. The Nouveau driver failed to boot on the 460 box. An install of the latest driver from NVidia's site solved this until the next kernel update, which causes plasma to not load. I have the latest Nvidia driver in a directory in 'home' and for every kernel update when the system stops before the splash screen 'alt-f2' gets me to a command prompt where I can reinstall the latest Nvidia driver-now 2.95.20-and a reboot gets me to the desktop with all apps and games running fine. It seems every kernel needs its own install of the driver to use it correctly just like Virtual Box which needs its module recompiled for each kernel.

This known and nasty problem disappeared (again for Fedora-F17) iff you upgrade akmod-nvidia and xorg-x11-drv-nvidia to version 302.17-1.fc18, taken from the rawhide. This a little bit strange solution also worked for me on the same problem with Fedora-15. It seems to be a linking problem

I am now on FC17. This shows after the login screen-the desktop loads but shows a blackscreen with the crash box on it-the krell monitor loads and shows normal activity, but no graphics. It is not Nvidia-I installed their driver in case it was a Nouveau glitch. Now I get to boot three times to get sound and 2-5 times to get a desktop. Should have stayed on 16 I guess. Had a desktop and sound at least. If I can offer any info to help let me know, or I'll wait and hope an upgrade to FC18 might work. Louis Muollo
