Description photoslelion07 2011-11-05 14:36:44 UTC
Version: 2.2.0 (using Devel)
OS: MS Windows

Hello from France.

The last time I've posted here, installation of digiKam failed. Now, with the Windows installer for version 2.2.0, all is fine. But once the program installed, it does not start. After clicking on "digiKam", nothing happens. No error message, nothing... I tried to start as administrator, with various compatibility options, etc., but nothing...

I have a W7 64 b OS. I tried it on an other computer under W7 32 b. and it works. Looking for infos, I've read on Dmitri Popov's blog that some users are also working under W7 64 b without any problem. Troubles were reported when Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable (x86) is missing, but it is installed on my computer.

Waiting for any idea...

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Just trying to start the program.

Actual Results:
Nothing. No error message, no message at all...

Expected Results:
Nothing.

Install Debugview from M$. Run it. Start digiKam and look message reported in debugview...

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896647

Note : It can be usefull to run kdebugdialog before and to turn on digiKam, libkipi, likexiv2, and libkdcraw debug space.

Thanks for the answer.

I cannot run kdebugdialog.exe. The result is exactly the same as digiKam itself : nothing happens.

Here are the reports for both programs :

00000001	0.00000000	[3480] kdebugdialog(3480): KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server: "Failed to get autolaunch address from launched dbus-daemon"

ok. dbus service do not run in background.

When you have installed digiKam, do you change default install dir ?

Comment 4 photoslelion07 2011-11-05 16:14:48 UTC
Not at all.

DigiKam is installed into C:\Program Files (x86)\digiKam.
Comment 5 photoslelion07 2011-11-05 18:56:39 UTC
I have looked for infos about DBus on the Web. I find nothing to tell me how to launch DBus Service under W7 (maybe this is not possible...). In fact, I found nothing about DBus + Windows.

Same result after a look at Windows services running on my computer : nothing with such name. As I have disabled many (useless) services before the installation of digiKam, perhaps some (or one) of them are (is) necessary, but as I told, I didn't find infos.
Comment 6 caulier.gilles 2011-11-05 19:00:05 UTC
Dbus is a message bus system. It's a service installed with KDEAPI under windows, so typically with digiKam installer... I have no idea why it don't start on your computer...

I found some files and/or folders with "dbus" in the digiKam directory. I just looked at some of them with NotePad++ but that's all... I don't know enough to change anything !

If you have some idea and if you want infos about my computer config, it will be a pleasure to help you helping me.

Thank you for all, I'll try again with next version... Who knows ?
Comment 8 caulier.gilles 2011-11-05 19:33:48 UTC
yes Ananta who will package installer with 2.3.0 release... He is in copy of this thread...

It is not actually a windows service that is installed, it is simply an application that gets started when digiKam (or some other kde app) is launched. Do you use any other KDE software? If so, would you have any qualms deleting your preferences for all KDE software?

I'm wondering if there is an issue with some file being there from a previous installation. Could you do the following:

1. restart your computer
2. uninstall digikam (via the programs and features control panel)
3. restart your computer
4. delete folder (if it exists) C:\Program Files (x86)\digiKam
5. if you have no problem losing all preferences in KDE apps, delete your kde preferences folder located here:
   C:\Users\<your windows username>\AppData\Roaming\.kde
6. either reinstall digikam 2.2.0, or wait until tomorrow and install 2.3.0
7. try running digikam again!

Out of curiosity, do you use any firewall software besides the one built in to windows? Or an anti-virus software other than microsoft defender or security essentials?

Thanks for your interest in my problem.

I have no other KDE software.

Unfornutaly, I previously followed the steps you explain (even if I didn't
know... !) because I installed digiKam twice on my computer today. And
before the second installation, I deleted the digiKam directory, including
.kde directory too in Appdata\Roaming, and I deleted also the entries of
registry about digiKam. But it did not work.

About firewall/antiviruses, yes, I use Zone Alarm. I'll try to disable it
(as I'm writing now, it is scanning my PC as every week on saturday,
sorry...) and to restart digiKam.

I'll download 2.3.0 tomorrow and try again (and again... ?)

Regards.
Comment 11 photoslelion07 2011-11-07 07:45:54 UTC
After disabling ZA, no more result, digiKam does not work.

So, I'll wait for 2.3.0.
Comment 12 photoslelion07 2011-11-07 20:30:43 UTC
I tried one more time to install and launch digiKam using the Ananta's Windows installer (2.2.0).

No more result, install is fine but digiKam does not want to work. Note that I have found a strange folder named "Trolltech" in Program Files. According to the Web, it looks like something in relation with KDE and/or digiKam.

I uninstalled digiKam but didn't find any uninstall process for Trolltech. So I deleted directly the folder and cleaned the registry (no entries for "digiKam" but some keys and subkeys for "Trolltech").

Maybe the 2.3.0 would be right for me... Wait and hope !
Comment 13 Ananta Palani 2011-11-07 21:12:10 UTC
Trolltech is the former name of the company that develops the Qt framework, so it's possible that another program that uses Qt installed that folder.

2.3.0 is now on Sourceforge if you want to try it out, but I have a feeling the result will be the same.

Comment 14 photoslelion07 2011-11-07 21:30:15 UTC
OK, thanks for the precisions.

About this "Trolltech" directory, I don't know how it came here, but this is not very important. Now it has gone away...

I saw the 2.3.0. I've previoulsy try to install older version of digiKam in different ways, but without success. Every time it failed, or there were errors with Visual C, etc. Only your installer allows me to have digiKam fully installed. Unfornutaly... you know the rest... Life is difficult... Well, I can also take my 32 b computer out of its closet and try to understand why digiKam works with it and not with my 64 b. It would certainly be a hard work, but there is probably something between the two which makes the difference. But where to search ? That's the main problem. Windows services ? .kde folder ? Elsewhere ?

If it is the only way to proceed, I'll do it...

Yes, but did you try installing using the windows installer (which I just uploaded yesterday evening)? Here is the download link:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/digikam/files/digikam/2.3.0/digiKam-installer-2.3.0-win32.exe/download

If, after installing 2.3.0, you still can't get digikam to start, right-click on the taskbar and chose 'Start Task Manager'. Then click the 'Processes' tab.

1. See if 'dbus-daemon.exe' is in the list of processes.
2. If it is, see if 'kded4.exe' or 'klauncher.exe' are in the list.
3. If they are, see if 'digikam.exe' is in the list.

I downloaded your installer one hour before I received your message. So I
had time to try DK, but always without success.

For the processes, it is not easy because they stay a very short time in
the Task manager windows... So I had to launch digiKam many times, but no
matter...

The results :
- dbus-daemon.exe was in the list but just once. It starts with
digikam.exe, but I didn't see it the next times,
- kde4.exe and klauncher.exe were not in the list at any time,
- digikam.exe was always in the list.

Can you download 32-bit Dependency Walker from here:

   http://www.dependencywalker.com/depends22_x86.zip

Extract it to some directory and run 'depends.exe'.

Then, go to the 'File' menu and choose 'Open'. Browse for the 'digikam.exe' executable on your hard drive and open it. Once opened, go to the 'Profile' menu at the top and choose 'Start Profiling...'. Check every box in the window that appears except 'Clear the log window', 'Log thread information, and 'Log a time stamp with each line of log'. Then click 'OK'.

It will try to launch digikam.exe and then DBUS-DAEMON.EXE. If you look under the 'Window' menu at the top, you should see an entry for both programs. Click on the 'DBUS-DAEMON.EXE' entry and at the bottom of the Dependency Walker window there is a log of the run attempt. Scroll through this list and see if there are any entries that are written in red text. Let me know what this text says. Also, in the box above the log, it lists all DLLs that DBUS-DAEMON.EXE accessed. Scroll to the very bottom. Sort this list by 'File Time Stamp' and look at the top for any entries that say 'Error opening file...' and let me know what these DLLs are (even on a working system you should see at least two DLLs that won't load, GPSVC.DLL and IESHIMS.DLL, so this may not tell us anything). Repeat this for the 'digikam.exe' entry under the 'Window' menu.
Comment 18 photoslelion07 2011-11-08 10:59:40 UTC
Thank you again for your efforts...

The process stops at once, because there is a problem with IEFRAME.DLL (in
Windows\System32).
Dependency Walker says : "Failure starting the process. L'opération
demandée nécessite une élévation (740)."
I had a look on this dll. I think that an "élévation" means : rights. But
the IEFRAME.DLL is impossible to change (it is an archived file and I
don't remember the way to modify this...)
Comment 19 Ananta Palani 2011-11-08 17:27:32 UTC
Can you try running digikam again in Dependency Walker and save the session by going to 'File' and then 'Save as' and attach the .dwi file here? Do this for both 'Window'->'digikam.exe' and 'Window'->'DBUS-DAEMON.EXE' (you don't run both because DBUS-DAEMON.EXE is started by digikam.exe, so you just go to the 'Window' menu after profiling digikam and you should see both).

I am really sorry if I didn't understand very well... I hope that the
files would be usefull.
Here are 3 files. The 1 and 2 were done after opening digikam.exe and
dbus-daemon.exe in Dependency Walker, but without clicking on Start
Profiling.
The number 3 was done after opening digikam.exe and after a clic on Start
Profiling. I assume that it is the one you want.

It doesn't look like any files were attached. Please visit the kde bugs website and attach the files there.

Thanks for e-mailing the files. Part of the problem is Zone Alarm is trying to load a version of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 runtime that seems to be incomplete on your system, so may be partially contributing to the problem. Here is the download for the runtime. Install BOTH the x86 and x64 versions, then restart:

   http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26347

Then try running digiKam again on its own (outside of dependency walker). If it doesn't work, run it inside dependency walker again and e-mail me the output.

Thanks to you for your help !
Unfortunately, it didn't work. I installed the two versions (x86 and x64),
but no more result...
You will find the new report with this mail.

That error I mentioned is now gone and I don't see anything loading incorrectly. I do see a zone alarm component called checkpoint (also zaforcefield) running. My hunch is that even though you disabled zone alarm it doesn't disable the checkpoint/forcefield. Would you mind uninstalling all of zone alarm including checkpoing and forcefield if they are separate components, restarting at least once, and trying to run digiKam on its own again?

I did what you said. Complete uninstalling of ZASS, including all
components like ForceField and Checkpoint, then restart.
DigiKam does not want to work anyway.

Well, I want just thank you for all you've tried. I uninstalled digiKam
for the moment and, maybe, it will works in a future release.
Otherwise, I can run it on my other computer if I want to test it.

Thank you once again !

The problem is the same : digiKam does not start.

Just a few words to say that I've changed motherboard, processor and memory to improve my computer (new features : motherboard : Asus P8H61-M LE/USB3, processor : QuadCore Intel Core i5-2500 3400 MHz, memory : 8 Go). I reinstall W7 64 bits.

But unfortunatly, no more results with digiKam. The program does not want to start.

Hello again.

I just installed digiKam (ver.2.7.0). The result is still the same : it does not start at all.

Please notice that I have no more Zone Alarm (replaced with both Comodo Firewall + MS Security Essentials).

What hardware is the same between your old computer setup and your new one? Do you have the same graphics card, hard drive, etc.? Any USB devices attached? If so, please let me know what they are.

Hello Ananta.

Here are identical items between my old config and the new one :
- the graphic card (Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS with 2 x 512 mem) (I'm not
absolutely sure),
- the two hard disks (one with C: and D: for system and data, the other
with J: and K: only for photos, silde scans and digital pictures).

About USB devices, a graphic tablet (Genius) is the only one which is
permanently attached (of course, sometimes, I use external disks, USB
keys, memory cards from my cameras).

About software, always Windows 7 64, Comodo firewall, Microsoft Security
Essential. You'll find a screenshoot of active process with this message.

Idea : several services are disabled on my computer (which are usually enabled with Windows 7).

Could the issue be solved if some services are needed by digiKam and are not available ?

Is there anyone who knows which services are needed (if there are) ?

Hi Lionel,

Someone else using a different KDE windows program ran into the same problem as you. They discovered that they had a custom hosts file which was causing problems. Could you open:

   C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and look for entries that contain 127.0.0.1 or localhost? If yes, place a # in front of the line to comment it out and save the file (you may have to open the file as an administrator to be able to write to the file). Then try opening digiKam again.

Also, there is a new version of digiKam for Windows available, but try the hosts thing first:
   http://download.kde.org/stable/digikam/digiKam-installer-3.1.0-win32.exe

Hi Ananta

Thank you a lot for the "trick" : it works fine. I added "#" at the
beginning of the line wich contains "127.0.0.1 localhost" and now, digiKam
starts. As i deleted digiKam from my computer, I downloaded the late
version (3.1) and all's right.

Now, I am be able to try digiKam (ouf !)

Thank you again.

Lionel

Excellent! I'm glad that worked. This bug has been bothering me for quite a while. I hope you enjoy using digiKam!

For future reference, the problem is an inability to resolve or contact 127.0.0.1, localhost, or both which causes dbus daemon to start properly. This problem is possibly related to IPv6 network configurations an a normally benign entry in the users host file for 127.0.0.1 pointing to localhost. As confirmed, commenting out this line seems to solve the problem.
