This bug follows a discussion on Bug 277010. The bug I'm reporting is very similar on that both relates to taskbar gaps, but is triggered differently. After asking, I was suggested to report a new bug or change the title of the existing one. Since I don't have permission to change the title I'm filing a new bug report.

On a fresh installation of Kubuntu Oneiric 11.10 I get black spaces in the taskbar. It's as though there should be maximised or minimised windows, but actually there are none. With time, these empty spaces increase in number. I don't think this is a distro-related bug, for I previously had Chakra installed on the same system and experienced exactly the same problem. If needed I could upload a screenshot, and would love to help in any way I can.

I'm getting blank spaces without dragging windows around or anything (unlike described in the aforementioned bug on how to trigger this behaviour) . Instead, these ghost spaces appear on a random basis, simply by using my desktop normally. There are none at startup, and they begin appearing after some time of normal use, pushing valid entries in the taskbar forward (thus increasing the number of rows).

Please - and politely :) - fix this annoying bug: it makes the desktop look seriously broken.

ERRATA CORRIGE: On a fresh installation of Kubuntu Oneiric 11.10 I get *blank* spaces in the taskbar.

Sorry, I mistyped black instead of blank as in "empty".

Well, it is the same bug, just multiple ways to reproduce it. I doubt it makes sense to have two entries open for the taskmanager issue, as it only causes confusion to those that wish to follow it.

If there is any specific reason you believe this is a different bug, please add a comment.

I agree with you, there's no need to have a new bug report, if it is in fact the same bug. I just asked because unsure, and followed the suggestion. If you believe it is indeed the same bug, please mark it as duplicate.

Perhaps you could change the title of the other bug, in order to be representative of both issues, please? Maybe something like: "Taskbar displays empty spaces thus forcing valid entries to arrange themselves in multiple rows" just to put emphasis on the empty spaces (foregrounded) rather than the "two rows" (backgrounded). This way, it could be descriptive also for those users who experience this same issue, but trigger it differently. Many thanks.

Thank you for changing the title of the other bug. I'll mark this one as a duplicate myself.
