My symptoms appear to be the same as those of the possible duplicate that I associated this to, but mine did not happen on installation of a printer driver.  Mine happened on an attempt to print a test page.  The driver had been installed since prior to the upgrade to the latest version of Kubuntu, but this was the first test page printed since that upgrade.
