Description Ruchir Brahmbhatt 2011-10-14 13:54:03 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.7.2)
OS: Linux

I think since I moved to kde 4.7, I'm facing this issue. I have several applications open and when I switch between apps, often app doesn't get proper focus and using keyboard shortcut in one app actually goes to other app causing serious issues like mail being deleted when I wanted to delete character in text editor. So window is shown but focus is not obtained. So it seems like operations will happen on currently presented window but it happens on other application in background having focus.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
Open several applications. Try to switch application by clicking taskbar buttton and use shortcuts to do any operation and notice when shortcut didn't work.

Actual Results:
Often application window shows up but doesn't have focus so have to click on window again to get focus and avoid doing operations on wrong window.

Expected Results:
When taskbar button for any application is clicked, in addition to showing the app window, it should also have focus so any operations done through keyboard shortcuts are done on that window.

Not sure if I understand the bug correctly. Could you check if this is bug 278869?

No that's different issue. Mine is about having focus. For instance when dolphin is shown, if I press delete, it'll delete text in kwrite as dolphin is in front but focus is on kwrite.

Do you also get the bug when switching windows via Alt+Tab? Do newly opened windows sometimes not get focus? If possible, can you provide exact steps to reproduce from a freshly created user account? Might be related to KWin focus stealing prevention, or a regression caused by the libtaskmanager changes.

I think I'm not getting issue with alt+tab or I don't use alt+tab much. J
Here is I generally do and come across this issue couple of times a day.

I have generally chrome, dolphin, evolution, konsole, kwrite, etc. open.
I keep switching between apps by clicking relevant taskbar button.
I often use keyboard shortcuts in app immediately after switching. For example, ctrl+t to create new tab in chrome which often ends up in toggling group by thread action in evolution.
Sometimes I select kwrite and try to delete characters and end up deleting emails in evolution.

It may be hard to try with new user account as it is not always reproducible and can take time to produce and I may not be able to use test account that longer. But I'll give it a try.

Hello!

This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug is already resolved in Plasma 5.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this bug report. If the issue described here is still present in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!
