Description Y 2011-10-14 13:20:36 UTC
Version: 4.7 (using KDE 4.7.2)
OS: Linux

I am using Kubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) with KDE 4.7.2 from the kubuntu-ppa on Launchpad.

Recently used addresses remembers and brings up only the email address, e.g. somebody@somewhere.net and not what I consider the full address "Some Body <somebody@somewhere.net>".

Older version (Kmail 1) used to remember the "full" address, including name.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
send an email to "Some Body <somebody@somewhere.net>" (omit the quotes). then try to send another email to it. Type the first couple of letters and see how the address is being autocompleted.

Actual Results:
somebody@somewhere.net

Expected Results:
Some Body <somebody@somewhere.net>

am I the only one experiencing this? even the recent upgrade to 4.7.4 of the Kubuntu PPA did not fix this.
Comment 2 Alexandre Bonneau 2012-01-09 20:37:42 UTC
I too can see this odd behavior, though it could be related by the fact than email autocompletion isn't working at all (you'd have to click 'select email..' to be able to see your contacts and select an email from there).

kmail version : 4:4.7.4+git111222-0ubuntu0.1~ppa1

Confirming Alexandre's observations. As we're all on kubuntu however, it might be downstream bug.
Comment 4 Silver Salonen 2012-03-12 10:17:26 UTC
Also happens in KDE 4.8.0 and 4.8.1 (on openSUSE 12.1).

Kmail 2 in its current state is a disgrace and should have never replaced Kmail 1. The error I reported in this bug is peanuts compared to the rest of the grievances that Kmail 2 caused me afterwards, including loss of messages and tampering of signatures when moving from one IMAP server to another IMAP server (archive). Kmail 2 is not beta. It is not even alpha. It should have been given more time to mature while Kmail 1 was doing its work just perfectly fine. Now I moved from Krapmail to Thunderbird, so I no longer care.Kmail 2 in its current state is a disgrace and should have never replaced Kmail 1. Instead it was pushed down our throats and resulted in Krap. I moved from Krapmail to Thunderbird and recommend everybody who wants a working email client do the same.

Y, I totally understand you (I felt quite the same when I first started using KMail2) and that's why I restarted using KMail in KDE 4.8 (which is now quite usable compared to the older versions).

But comments like this don't help anyone anymore - developers are very well aware that many users have experienced major difficulties, but the train has left the station and all they can do now is to continue fixing bugs.

So please, don't demotivate them with such comments :)
Comment 7 Y 2012-03-12 15:25:47 UTC
Silver: it's decisions like replacing a nicely working kmail 1 with kmail 2 that are the root cause of the problem. my comment just make developers aware that whoever is driving the train is sernding them and their creature to a slaughterhouse by pressing the release button too early.

whoever is in the driving seat of the locomotive should have thought before pushing the button to leave the station. now the train is a wreck. some wagons have derailed. the accident has happened and is, in my case at least, irreversible. too late. autocompletition of email is a nuisance. loss of emails and tampered signatures cannot be fixed.

the developers are better off thinking of a train that is more receiptive of their work, more protective of it while it is in progress, and releases when the release has a chance to work. My advice for developers: jump ship. If you are interested in email, develop on Thunderbird. Get rid of whoever pushed the train too fast out of the station.

I can confirm this bug, openSUSE 12.1, KDE 4.7.2 as well as 4.8.4.
Comment 9 Volker Kuhlmann 2013-08-14 00:40:38 UTC
Problem exists with kmail2 4.10.5, openSUSE 12.3 rpms.
Problem did not exist with kmail 1.x.

See https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301448 (bug#301448), of which this is a duplicate.
Comment 10 Silver Salonen 2013-08-14 06:34:34 UTC
Address completion is made better in KMail 4.11, but this bug is still somewhat present in there too.

In KMail 4.11, if you start typing an e-mail address, there are 2 groups from which to choose the address: "Recent Addresses" and "Contacts found in your data", from which the latter shows addresses with contacts' names, but the former lists only e-mail addresses.
Comment 11 Denis Kurz 2016-09-24 18:02:14 UTC
This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kmail2 (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.12 or later), it gets closed in about three months.
Comment 12 Bogdan Mihaila 2016-09-25 09:58:27 UTC
Hi

Confirming that the bug still exists in KMail2. Here the version info:
KMail 5.2.3
KDE Frameworks 5.24.0
Qt 5.6.1
Kubuntu 16.04

To summarize the bug again the autocompletion list of recent email addresses has only the mail address and not the associated name. Examples are given in the Bug description or Comment 0 above.

Thanks for the feedback.
Comment 14 Vojtěch Zeisek 2017-05-26 12:11:12 UTC
This bug is still sporadically present in 5.5.1. It helps to clear cache of respective addressbook in Akonadi Console. This is just a workaround, as such need should not happen.
