Description RSB 2011-09-19 11:56:01 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.7.1)
OS: Linux

Please make the the selection of each chat-tab configurable (like it's done eg. in konqueror). The expected behaviour would be that you can select each tab with a own shortcut (so it's possible to configure the telepathy-chat-ui to select each chat tab with alt+[number]. Simmilar to the behaviour of pidgin). This would be a big usability improvement for multiple parallel conversations.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Expected Results:
chose each (first 10) tabs with a own shortcut

at the moment you can select using ALT+the underlined letter from the tabs name...

RSB, do you agree this can be closed, since it is already possible to access any chat tab with a shorcut?
Comment 5 RSB 2012-09-01 12:36:12 UTC
Hm, this decision is not up to me.

The question is the following. Does the kde-telepathy team (or in general the kde developers) want a unified way in all kde apps for selecting different tabs or not?
This is a question which the kde-telepathy team has to answer (or the kde-usability team). There should be a disussion about this topic on the mailing lists or at a developer meeting.

As an user I'm personally intrested in consistency throug different apps. Why should exist different ways in selecting tabs between e.g. firefox, konqueror, reqonk and kde-telepathy on the other side?
Comment 6 David Edmundson 2012-09-01 13:08:19 UTC
konqueror doesn't navigate tabs with alt+number. Nor does dolphin

I'm all for consistency, but so far it seems like Rekonq is the weird one, not us.

It's settable in the shortcuts config in Konqueror, you can set shortcuts for up to 12 tabs, rekonq then has config for 9 tabs. I imagine they share (originally) the same code for that.

If you want this to be unified in all KDE apps, it would have to go into KTabWidget and that's something that should be taken into kde-core-devel mailing list. Of course our team wants to contribute to the "KDE experience", but we surely can't speak for "the general kde developers".

Given this isn't a standard across KDE, we're not going to add this.

When you have more than 3 tabs this will become difficult to use as you can't see them anyway.

Hmm you are right this is not shared between all the apps kde have, but it is common concept that is used among variety of IM/irc clients (even konversation).

Used concept is to use alt+[1-0] and then alt+[q-p]{keyboard line wise} to switch between first 20 tabs.

With the concept of vertical tabs listing (see bug#298961) this gets really usefull, because for example I have currently opened 15 tabs and I don't see any reason why to close some of them, it is only annoying that I have to navigate around them with mouse instead of having my hands on the keyboard all the time.
