Description Geert Lamers 2011-08-31 22:43:54 UTC
Version: git-latest (using KDE 4.7.0)
OS: Linux

Sometimes when people start a chat with me, I get no notification about it. On opening a chat window with the contact, no messages are shown.

I'm under the impression that it happens when I've talked to someone before, but the chat was closed or has been quiet for a while, but I cannot confirm this 100%. Maybe a chat can timeout, which isn't handled properly, and no new chat in started on incoming messages?

I'd say this is a problem instant messengers can do without.

I know for sure this happens with MSN (butterfly), I can't say about other protocols.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
New incoming chat

Actual Results:
Absolutely nothing

Expected Results:
Notification, allowing me to respond

I hate to give one of those "it works for me" type answers especially as it's clearly a very serious issue, but we're going to need some more information to work out where the problem lies to be able to fix this.

Do you use other connections, have you seen the same issue there?
Do you have empathy installed?
What version of telepathy-butterfly do you run?
Are you on a dodgy internet connection? We don't disconnect when you go offline, which can lead to a few problems with some CMs.

Most importantly, could you install telepathy-logger (it's probably already in your package repository, as it's not KDE specific) and when it's installed and you know you've missed a message could you search in ~/.local/share/TpLogger/logs/ for the missed messages.

If tp-logger receives them and KDE doesn't then the problem lies with us. Otherwise we may need to ask upstream telepathy.

Thanks for the reply :) I thought you'd need more info but I had no idea where to find any.

I do have a GTalk account. I can't say I've seen the same issue there but I can't me sure. I'll try to test later.

I don't have Empathy installed. I could try to see if it has the same problems, but I try to keep my system as clean as possible (it would mean another 19 dependencies).

I've just installed telepathy-logger, will see how that works out. Does it need anything other than installation to work?

My version of telepathy-butterfly is 0.5.15-r1 (Gentoo stable) which is the latest release.

My internet connection is pretty stable, I've never had issues with Kopete not showing messages, my IRC connection rarely drops.

I'll report back when I have more information.

I've seen this before with butterfly & empathy, it's a butterfly bug. I never reported it upstream, though. I switched to haze instead... :P (/me hides)

It appears (based on IRC chat with Geert)that this is an upstream (tp-butterfly) issue. Not much we can do.

I have switched to haze, too. Took me a while to figure out how to set it up, since telepathy-accounts-kcm-plugins hadn't installed the plugins to configure it, so I had to install Empathy to setup the accounts.

I haven't had the chance to test it extensively yet, but the issue I was having appears to be gone. Haze has other problems though (undeliverable message errors, avatars not always loading, can't change nickname/personal message).

Butterfly bug. We have switched to haze. Haze plugin has been implemented
