Description Thomas Zell 2011-08-27 11:47:38 UTC
Version: 4.7 (using KDE 4.7.0)
OS: Linux

After automatically converting my mail directory to the new KMail2 opening some folders causes the error message:
KMail Folders: Error while reading mails from folder

When I delete/move an email from the folder the message:
KMail Folders: Cannot move email from folder [...]
appears.

Mails are also randomly displayed duplicated or disappear on each restart of KMail2. This seems to happen only for recent mails.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Start KMail.

Actual Results:
Above error messages appear. Mails are displayed twice or not at all.

Expected Results:
No errors, Folder contents are "stable"

The errors appear only in folders which are targets of filter rules which move mails into them.

Selecting "Update folder and subfolders" also triggers the error message.

To be more specific: this is a maildir folder which is in a akonadi_mixedmaildir_resource

i encounter the same issue, only slightly worse -- just migrated to kmail2 and imported some years of correspondence.

when i start kmail, i literally get hundreds of notifying messages that mails in some kmail folder could not be changed. i see 2.600+ unread mails in my inbox folder (they were all read before, and a lot are duplicates), and it seems kmail tries to apply the filters i defined and fails most of the time. after some minutes of message repeating, knotify4 freezes eating up all CPU time. a few minutes later an error message informs me that a "program kmail folder of type kmail maildir" has crashed.

ok, one thing i could track down: kmail2 seemed to have missed the folders ~/Mail/cur, ~/Mail/new and ~/Mail/tmp, which didn't exist. after i created those folders (in all hidden subfolders, too), at least the staccato error messages in "settings -> configure kmail -> accounts -> reveicing -> kmail folders" would disappear. i guess they also triggered the notify messages.

btw, only after i opened the above kmail folders configuration ("edit") at the same time the problem occurred, which was just a hunch, i was given an informative error message. something more useful like "Error: Folder ~/Mail/cur does not exist" should probably replace the rather meaningless "error reading from some folder (but i won't tell you which one...)" notifications in the first place ;-)

forget what i just wrote, it actually didn't help a bit. these damn popups keep driving me nuts each and every time i stark kmail. it is in no shape for actual work here (it's 4.7.2 from kubuntu 11.10, btw).

running kmail on the console didn't give much insight either ("unknown error 103").

in the meantime i got rid of the messages, by skipping kmail-migrator and importing kmail folder archives. to get these, i had to copy a backup of my mail folder to another machine still running kmail1, exporting each folder manually as a folder archive and re-importing them in kmail2.

if that's what it takes, that should be a feature of kmail-migrator as well. it took almost a whole day until kmail2 was finished with importing more than 113.000 mails altogether -- btw, i never had real problems managing them with kmail1. kmail2 behaves significantly slower (sometimes even freezes fetching folder content), does not apply mail filtering on my pop3 accounts, and doesn't even perform a fulltext search of my mail any more. odd, to say the least.

Same (or at least same symptoms) with Kubuntu 11.10 4.7.2. Mail breakage is all over the place it seems.

Same here on kubuntu with a long mixed mail folder migrated.

I have not seen this problem anymore in a long time ...
