Version: 4.6 (using KDE 4.6.2) OS: Linux I have a 1TB external HDD with a huge amount of files on it. Every time I mount that HDD on my Kubuntu 11.04, it keeps it busy for several minutes. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Mount external HDD with a lot of files on it Actual Results: HDD is busy for several minutes. Expected Results: HDD should just be mounted, without being parsed or whatever.
Can you confirm that disabling Desktop Search (Strigi indexer), or excluding the drive from the list of indexed directories helps to resolve that issue? You could also check the process list (Ctrl+Esc) to see the names of the processes that are working while the disk accesses happen.
Active processes are: mount.ntfs, nepomukserver, plasma-desktop, kdeinit4, krunner. Disabling Strigi does not have any effect. Did not restart the computer however. Indexing removable devices is disabled. Under Indexed Folders, /media/myhdd is not activated. Where should I add the exclusion: On the part where it already says: *~, *.part, *.o, ...?
It could be Nepomuk setting directory notifications, Linux currently has no other way to find out where a file has been moved to. Note that this is not related to indexing. If disabling Nepomuk does not change anything, it could also be related to NTFS checks. Try mounting it in Windows and do a clean unmount there.
Disabling Nepomuk BEFORE mounting the Hard Drive works. However, if I add /media/Expansion\ Drive/ to the exception list under User-Defined Index Folders -> Exceptions for Strigi Index, the HDD is still being accessed. So how do I keep Nepomuk from accessing my HDD?
Thanks for the update, reassigning to Nepomuk developers.
External storage media handling has been significantly improved in KDE 4.7 and last (hopefully) bugs have been fixed in 4.7.3. Now the external disk will only get indexed if you choose to do so. And the only work that will be done when mounted is to update that optional index.
