Description xdmx 2011-08-14 21:47:53 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.7.0)
OS: Linux

I installed kubuntu on my mother's notebook and she use it without any big problems (she has never used windows). But today I found a really big problem on usability. She asked me to teach her to print photographs........ it's been a nightmare!
I used gwenview to show her, file, print, options, and then the nightmare begins: paper dimension (on my printer, epson d78) it's also _impossible_ to set a custom size!!!), paper type, color type, and another bunch of options.... and then print, the result was very good a part that it add lateral margins (1cm each) when I set 0, and the paper size was 0.1cm bigger.
But it's not finished, after the print you need to revert the changes in order to print normal pages....so again paper dimension, type, etc etc.....
you see that there is a really problem of usability in order to print a simple photo, right?

Now I describe you the process under windows 7 (just because my aunt showed my mother how print a photo): select a photo, print, choose the dimension (there is the exactly correct one) and then print.....

I don't know under macosx, but I bet that it's the same or maybe even easier (like that it reads your mind :) )

Finally my mother told me that when she'll need to print a photo she'll ask me to print it... and that's not good

So the wish is........ make it easy to print a photo ;)

Reproducible: Always

Expected Results:
2-3 clicks to print a photo, not more, not probably 15-20 as it's now

As far as i know you can't choose a custom size page in linux, QT should have been removed it at least for HP printers. But should be able to select a4 and other standard pages. To get an easier way to print though you could try to use kipi-plugins (print images or print assistant) following plugin menu (export iirc).

Hi Angelo, I tried the print assistant. But it actually adds extra stuff to config, the ink quality as photograph isn't set, the page size of the standard 10x15 isn't there (it's in the page layout, but not in the page settings, which is where you actually set the real size). It's actually useful in order to print captions and more photo in a single page. It's a pity see all this complexity :(

Not sure this is really related to Gwenview, but more related to the general printer configuration in Linux. Gwenview only selects the printer settings that are available system wide, so this is not application specific. It also highly depends on the available printer driver.

Re-assigning to the print-manager.

This is related to the print dialog,
Re-assigning to it.

Hi,

kdelibs (version 4 and earlier) is no longer maintained since a few years.

KDE Frameworks 5 or 6 might already have implemented this wish.

If not, please re-open against the matching framework if feasible or against the application that shows the issue.

We then can still dispatch it to the right Bugzilla product or component.

Greetings
Christoph Cullmann
