Description S. Burmeister 2011-08-03 19:53:27 UTC
Version: unspecified
OS: Linux

The filter panel (translated to "search panel" in German) has no use of its own, i.e. it is inactive. It only gets active if one starts a search from some other unrelated and unconnected part of the GUI.

It would make more sense if the search panel would allow to search, i.e. provide an input field. Users on the mailinglist asked why the search panel is visible by default but also disabled by default (and asked how to remove it since it is of no use).

If it provided an input field its function would be obvious.

Another issue is that it is only half visible and does looks out of place. Maybe setting the default position to "tabbed" behind the information panel would be better, especially since moving it is not possible by default since it is locked.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
open dolphin

Actual Results:
it is not possible to search with the search panel
it is not possible to filter either

Expected Results:
ability to search/filter right from the panel

I think two things are mixed in this bug-report: The first is that the search-panel is disabled and the second is that the search panel is shown/visible per default.

For me the main-issue here is that it is shown/visible per default. This issue "only" occurs when upgrading from a 4.6 release, with a fresh user the search panel is disabled per default and is only shown when a searching has been started. I'll try to provide a patch for this...

Regarding the issue that the search-panel is disabled: Currently it can be used only in combination with enabled Nepomuk + Strigi. Making this functionality available otherwise would technically be possible but mean a huge effort that (at least I) won't be able to handle. Still this would be a valid wish of course but I'd see this as separate bug-report if this is OK for you.

There is no need to provide the functionality without using nepomuk/strigi. Just mediate the needed information to the user.

The bug reports for the issues are:

1. Place an input field on the filter/search panel to enable the user to start a search (this bug report)

2. Do not enable the filter panel by default when updating 4.6 top 4.7 bug 279348.

3. Mediate to the user why the panel is disabled (all functionality greyed out) and how to enable it bug 279349.

Resetting assignee to default as per bug #305719

It looks like all the issues brought up in this bug report have been resolved as of Dolphin 16.12.3 and 17.08.0.
