Description Michael Ritzert 2001-06-30 16:40:57 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kmail
Version: 1.2.9 (using KDE 2.2.0 beta1)
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: compiled sources
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.0-4GB
OS/Compiler notes:

Hi there

following scenario: I use filters to automatically sort incoming messages into different folders (I love that automaticsort-by-mailinglist feature :-) ). Now the point is I have more folders than fit in the pane without having to scroll. Therefore I sometimes miss new messages in a folder that just happens not to be visible.

My question: would it be possible to create a virtual folder "new mails" that holds (references to) all new mails in any folder?

I indeed also had this problem recently myself and a new mail was waiting a
few days :-)
Since I have already 11 IMAP accounts that makes a lot of folders. I can
only see 46 of my 55 folder at a time.

Nevertheless are you already using the long folder list mode?
Also it is possible to make folders child folders and collapse them. The
parent folder is also bold if child folders have new mails.
This thinks should actually be sufficiant for the problem.

Maybe we could display somewhere a red arrow if there are new mails out of
the visible range.

Yes. That shows me about 30 folders of my about 50. (too lazy to count right
now ;-) )

That sounds good. I hadn't thought about that before.

That sounds even better. I would definitively call this a valuable feature.

Thanks

Is there an option to sort IMAP folders in the display by 'number of unread
messages in folder'? This way I'd never lose sight of mailboxes with unread
messages in them. I like the virtual folder idea, though, because it's
a one-stop spot to quickly scan for anything serious that might have come in on
days that I can't spend time to read all my mail, then handle items folder-by-
folder based on importance or other context over the course of the day (go
through 'boss' folder, compose lengthy replies, 'peer' folder, read
jokes, 'auctions' folder, address envelopes and paypal people).

In KDE 3.1 there are separate columns for the number of unread messages
and the total number of messages in a folder. It's possible to sort by
these columns.

Isn't this a special search folder usecase and therewith implemented in HEAD?
Comment 6 Ingo Klöcker 2003-03-17 17:44:21 UTC
To answer Stephan's question: No. One still can't search messages with a certain status (new,
important, etc.).

Virtual Folders in common would be very nice, for example when i mark an email
with "import", there should be a folder "Important mails" as seen in Evolution..
Comment 8 Till Adam 2003-08-07 10:32:56 UTC
Searching on status and with it vFolders of new, unread, important mail, vFolder of
watched threads etc will shortly be possible. I'm working on that.
Comment 9 Ian 2003-10-29 00:47:39 UTC
vFolders would be an awesome addition to Kmail. I've switched from Evolution to Kmail for a variety of reasons but miss the vFolders.
Comment 10 Till Adam 2003-10-29 09:01:43 UTC
As promised, searching on status and with it vFolders of new, unread, important mail, vFolder of watched threads etc will be possible in kmail 1.6 which will be part of kde 3.2.

I've got another wish concerning vFolders: I love sorting my emails in folders according to recipients (for example all of my friends get their own folder). Sometimes there's some discussion going on among us and I'd love to sort my email as usual. But additionally it'd be great if I could say: Now show me all the mails of for example peter, mary and stephen in one folder to be able to follow the discussion as a whole.
