kscd (1.5) on KDE Platform 4.7.1 (4.7.1) using Qt 4.7.4

- What I was doing when the application crashed:
First time I tried KSCD after upgrading to KUbuntu 11.10. According to aptitude, the package version is 4:4.7.1-0ubuntu2.

All reporters above who mentioned their environment have a x86_64 system. That also holds for my system - just in case it is relevant for this crash.

Every time I launch the application, it crashes immediately.

The phonon backend does not matter at all, crash here using either gstreaner, vlc or mplayer.

This is using VLC backend, and kde 4.8 beta1:

kscd (1.5) on KDE Platform 4.7.2 (4.7.2) "release 5" using Qt 4.7.4

starting KsCD. It ran once after a fresh boot. It fails after the system had resumed from suspend.

Comment 15 Howard 2011-12-01 00:50:09 UTC
I did some more testing.
Hardware is a ThinkPad T23 with internal DVD drive. System is:
OS: Linux 3.1.0-1.2-default i686
System: openSUSE 12.1 (i586)
KDE: 4.7.2 (4.7.2) "release 5"

KsCD crashes (fails to start) if the drive is empty, but runs correctly if there is a CD inserted.

If the DVD drive is empty, nothing happens when the open button on it is pressed. The only way I have been able to open an empty drive is starting K3b, clicking "Device", then "Eject". If I then put in a CD, an "Audio CD" entry appears in Places in Dolphin, and KsCD will start, and play it. KsCD will eject a loaded drive, as will Dolphin by right-clicking the entry in Places. The button on the drive still gets no response. When the disk is removed and the drive closed, it disappears from Dolphin. The running KsCD will not eject the empty drive; only K3b can eject an empty.

This same hardware worked fine when recently configured as:
OS: Linux 2.6.37.6-0.9-default i686
System: openSUSE 11.4 (i586)
KDE: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6"

Also, I never get a device icon in the tray with OpenSuSE 12.1. The icon appeared whenever a disk was loaded under 11.4
Comment 16 Howard 2011-12-01 06:42:44 UTC
Curiouser and curiouser.
I switched the DVD drive with a CD-RW drive, and the latter would open by pushing the eject button on the drive. I switched back to the DVD drive I originally wrote about, and now it will open with the drive button.
KsCD still crashes when the drive is empty, works with a disk inserted - same behavior with both the DVD and CD-RW drives.

Both drives work correctly in Windows XP Pro.

This is a 32-bit system.

Regards,
Howard
Comment 17 Ivan Ramos 2011-12-01 23:40:47 UTC
thanks.i will keep it in mind. I will try it with my two drive, cd and dvd
drive. Thanks.

I installed kde-4.7.95 (I assume that is 4.8 RC).
Kscd indeed doesn't crash on starting with an empty cd drive.
But it doesn't play either.
When I click the playlist button it shows all the titles on the cd.
I tried with both xine and gstreamer backends for phonon.
When I click the kscd eject button it ejects the cd ok.
Vlc and audacious play the cd fine.
Gerard.
