Description ed_kiefer 2011-07-06 16:01:57 UTC
Version: 2.0.0
OS: MS Windows

If I open a CR2 file, do some small post processing in edit tab then import and then save/export to folder . The cr2 can not be opened by digikam or other apps (DPP, Zoombrowser) . this is using "all file" filer in exporting window .

Also if I sepecify any format jpeg, png etc and save to desktop the files are really all tiff files according to infranview editor . size are huge 70mb where caw cr2 are like 15mb .
Also if I saved the cr2 to same folder as orginal but i renamed it, only the new one is shown in digikam folder window even though other editors show all pics in folder . Maybe this is because there no new version option for raw saving if in same folder ?

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
just try and export a raw cr2 as above . open make some small change in post processing. import and then export . new cr2 can't not be displayed

Actual Results:
can't open newly saved/exported pic

Expected Results:
should of save pic and open ok
Comment 1 ed_kiefer 2011-07-06 16:03:30 UTC
Reproducible: Didn't try
this should of been "reproducible" not didn't try .
Comment 2 caulier.gilles 2011-11-24 11:17:46 UTC
Marcel,

I suspect a problem with versioning already fixed in Git/Master. Right ?

Ed,

Can you reproduce it with 2.3.0 release, or git/master implementation (next 2.4.0) ?

I am still on 2.0 install . Have not tried 2.3 yet but if you think it should be fixed i can give it try or wait for 2.4 ?

I am on windows OS and need binaries/exe
Comment 4 caulier.gilles 2011-11-24 12:58:20 UTC
2.3.0 binary setup for windows exist in sf.net repository...

Please try with it.

Ok , using window 2.3 , open a Raw.CR2 pic, import, did minor edit and the tried export and pointed to desktop . the file cr2 can't be opened by any app now .
I then also tried import and then normal default save, this made a jpg in same folder . can't read this file either .
Last I try save to tiff , this one works .

hope that helps

original CR2 file as disappear ? It still on your harddrive ? Can you see it with file manager ? What's the properties of file before and after import in image editor ?

No, the orginal cr2 is unchanged sorry .
the saved cr2 file is 70mb in size , hmm
Edit the cr2 is really a tiff, I just renamed and it opened fine (this is the saved/exported cr2)
Also on the tiff that was made if I try and export that to jpg , I get a jpg compression window to set amount (didn't get that with default save) but when I save to jpeg I can't open and it really is tiff file (same 70mb size)

So it seems all saved/exported formats are a tiff in reality
Comment 8 caulier.gilles 2011-11-24 14:19:23 UTC
I'm lost.

You said that CR2 is a TIFF. yes it is but not in fact. it's a TIFF/EP plus private tags and format from Canon.

You said that you change CR2 extension to TIF. Why ? you break type mime.

Can you open it with showfoto as well ? It's stand alone version of image editor.

Comment 9 ed_kiefer 2011-11-24 14:28:37 UTC
because the saved/exported cr2 would not open with any app , only when I renamed it tiff did it open.

More info

hold on this is complicated . lets do overview as I am getting different results opening the files with DPP and digikam .
Orginal cr2 opens with all . the default save file jpg (size 3mb)does not show correctly and fails to open in digikam but opens and displays fine in DPP and in infraview .
The saved tiff file opens and displays fine in digikam and infraview but not in DPP (shows blank image with X throw it .
Comment 10 ed_kiefer 2011-11-24 14:38:07 UTC
no, the saved/exported cr2 will not open in showfoto or other editors
Comment 11 ed_kiefer 2011-11-24 14:52:44 UTC
as for the cr2 , maybe don't let digikam save in cr2 format . I also have rawtherapee and that converter doesn't save in orginal format (cr2) only tiff, png, jpg formats .

There still odd behavior with jpg saving
Comment 12 ed_kiefer 2011-11-24 15:16:01 UTC
There seems to be a general issue with opening jpg files in digikam . even ones out of camera .
I don't know why but some jpg get a "fail to open image" message in digikam when you try to open .
But if I open a second time it loads ok , very odd .
Comment 13 Pierre Hanser 2011-11-24 20:05:07 UTC
not only jpeg file but also canon cr2:
first try to edit fails
but second try is OK
not always, more often after many other editings
Comment 14 caulier.gilles 2011-11-24 20:10:36 UTC
Edit fails ?

You want mean that no image is displayed in editor and it said "cannot open image" ?
Comment 15 Pierre Hanser 2011-11-24 20:19:43 UTC
exactly
Comment 16 caulier.gilles 2011-11-24 20:45:46 UTC
Ahaha... Welcome to the club. It's reproducible under Linux. I don't use Windows.

I can reproduce this dysfunction sometime on my lead computer (i5 2.4Ghz + 16 GB RAM)

In debug mode it's difficult to reproduce. In production mode, without debug code, it's more easy to reproduce.

On my laptop, or a slower computer, it's not reproducible. It's a race condition somewhere, but where ?

I already talk with Marcel about this problem.

You mean the "failed to open image" when opening the image editor for the first time?
Any console output?

Comment 22 ed_kiefer 2011-11-27 00:30:22 UTC
Just found important info on the "fail to load image" error . I have digikam setup that when I click on image it goes to edit view (separate window) . now if I right click on image and choose view or use top menu view button the pic loads ok . so it displays ok but when I hit or try the edit button I get "fail to load image" error .
Comment 23 caulier.gilles 2011-11-27 10:19:56 UTC
yes same for me. loading as preview in reduced or full image size work perfectly in album gui. The dysfunction appear only with editor. This want mean that race condition is located in this component only.

Ed,

This file still valid using digiKam 2.3 for windows ?

Comment 25 ed_kiefer 2011-12-18 17:55:06 UTC
yes, all comments from #5 down from me are with last win 2.3 on XP SP3 OS.
Comment 26 ed_kiefer 2012-01-07 00:32:39 UTC
update: installed digikam 2.5 and now so far no problem opening jpgs (editing) .
Also saving seems fine with save >tiff, jpg etc .

The only save issue I had is "save new version as" from drop down menu option (the save as new version button works fine). If for example I save as jpg it asks for compression alright but after clicking ok you get error window saying "Unable to determine the format to save the target image with"
Comment 27 ed_kiefer 2012-01-07 01:09:31 UTC
I spoke to soon, while Infraview displayed fine , DPP and Zoombrowser could not display the tiff's that were saved. jpg were ok .
And on the "export" option , saving as CR2 didn't work (won't open in any viewer and only tiff worked) , jpg saved to desktop gave error from infraview file is wrong extension tiff . the jpe file was 60mb like tiff in size .I get same error exporting to desktop in jp2, and png, infraview says its wrong extension, really tiff .

Coming back to this file and reading all comments I'm completely lost as to where any remaining problem is located. I suggest to close this and open new dedicated reports.
