Description Volker Bause 2011-06-17 20:42:42 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.6.0)
OS: Linux

In a working environment, it only makes sense that the user can open more than one address of clients and suppliers at the same time. KMail does this with tabs which allows you to open different folders at the same time. This does not appear to be possible with Kaddressbook and is a feature that is seriously lacking. All other address books I ever used can do this to my knowledge. The KDE4 team have done a great job on KMail from the last time I have used it. I specifically use IMAP. Kontact would be almost perfect if one could open more than one kontact or address at the same time.

An example would be that a customer phones me and I open his address to make some notes or change some details. While I am on the phone with this client and wish to keep his details open, I would want to open address to look up something or make a note. In the version I have, this is impossible as far as I can see. I Googled around but could not find a solution or even mentioning to this problem. The question I have to ask myself is if I am the only person using Kontact that uses KAddress in this way. As their are many other features missing in KAddress such as different views, I have to assume that the KDE team has not managed to get to this point yet (i.e. To give Address Book the attention it deserves as a collaboration manager). The KMail Offline IMAP facility works perfect for me. It's the best IMAP client I have ever seen. Now I only wish the KDE team could fix the address book to at least allow you to access more than one address book at any time. I don't care to much about looks but functionality is key.

I thank KDE Kontact developers in advance. My opinion is that you are getting close to beating MS Outlook in terms of the features I need. I have been using Evolution for the last year or so because KMail a while ago was to limited for me. The only feature truly lacking now is what this request is all about. Thanks!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Try to Open more than one address at the same time. It's impossible to my knowledge.

Actual Results:
Can only Open and Edit one Address at a time.

Expected Results:
Open and edit 2,...,100 Addresses at the same time if this is truly required.

Using OpenSUSE 11.4 x86_64

This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kaddressbook (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.08 or later), it gets closed in about three months.
