Description Ray 2011-06-17 19:18:57 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.6.3)
OS: Linux

Would like to have KPackageKit on Kickoff's "Computer" menu. This seems like a logical place for it especially given its importance and how often I access it.

Better yet, an easy way to modify this menu (and others) would be great.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Why not just add it to the Favorites?
Comment 2 Ray 2011-06-17 20:14:20 UTC
I did actually, and that's a reasonable solution. But my favorites are becoming over-crowded and this just seems to me like something that belongs on the Computer menu together with System Settings, System Info, etc. It's one of the system-level "go to" apps and seems (to me) to be deserving of "special treatment". Arguably, some users will use KPackageKit more than even System Settings in the life of a Linux system.

The problem is that package management is not part of the KDE Software Compilation, but has to be provided by the distribution. For example, in openSUSE, the YaST package manager is used.

I still leave this wish open for Plasma developers to decide about configurability of that menu.
Comment 4 Ray 2011-06-18 02:54:14 UTC
That is true but:

1) I assume it would be configurable by distributions so it can show their preferred PM instead; and

2) due to PackageKit I assume that KPackageKit is viable on all (or at least most) distributions out of the box and it is nice to have a standard UI for managing packages; I can use KPackageKit on any KDE system and it works the way I'm used to (I did this myself recently when switching between Kubuntu and Fedora; worked great). Maybe, though, I'm mistaken about how universal PackageKit is and maybe some distro-specific PMs offer more advanced functionality (such that users prefer it)?

Hello!

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!
