Description Nikos Papas 2011-06-14 21:36:41 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.6.4)
OS: Linux

When using details view mode and moving over/selecting the folders, dolphin/konqueror highlights only the folder, instead of the entire line. I was only able to find the following thread:

http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=61747

where they claim that enabling such a feature would prevent the users from pasting anything to a folder since there must be empty space for right-clicking or pressing Ctrl-v.

Despite that being true, it could possibly be avoided in a simple way: suppose the user wants to paste an item. By right-clicking anywhere on the pane (thus selecting a folder), the menu should have two options; one for pasting the item in the current directory and one for pasting the item inside the folder. This also allows for shortcuts allocation, such as Ctrl-v for the first option and, say, Ctrl-b, for the second.

I believe this would solve the "empty space" problem and would give dolphin/konqueror a better look. What do you think? Thanks in advance!

Reproducible: Always

Also, this would essentially allow for the whole line to be clickable rather than the folder alone.

I too agree on this. It is just weird you can not click the whole line to select an item. Almost in all other file managers I have used you can do this thing, e.g. in nautilus, krusader, windows explorer, finder.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I currently don't intend to make an option for this or change the behavior because of the following reasons:

- As you said already pasting items gets a problem. Your suggestion with the right-click and the menu does not work for the drag & drop usecase.

- The rubberband selection won't be possible anymore.

- Obviously this change of behavior is requested by very less people considering the number of duplicates + votes.

Probably there are solutions to the paste-issue and rubberband-selection I'm not aware of, but still the current behavior is there since more than 4 years and the majority of target users of Dolphin seem to like it.

Fair enough, thanks for taking the time to answer.

OK, then I'll close it as won't-fix. Please note that I'm still open for suggestions to probably change my opinion (as noted above: maybe there are ideas to solve the paste + rubberband issue in a very nice way).

Found the thread from https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=379350

I support the full horizontal and think it is possible but depends on the resources of maintainers that is time and passion. It might require improving the paste mechanics. Then the benefits are more.
