line 83 is the end of the destructor. line 82 is the middle of it. it is the object (0x95d7938) in both frames of the backtrace. which means that the object is deleting itself via an automatic mechanism (QObject or QGraphicsItem deletion)

are you able to repeat this? (note that you can simulate a shutdown with `kquitapp plasma-desktop`) if so, is there a set of steps needed to reproduce? do you have some specific settings for the tasks widget? is it using multiple rows of buttons on the panels? did you have a group expanded?

The problems started after upgrading from KDE SC 4.6 to 4.7.

The problem seems to disappear after performing the following steps: 
- (Log out, if you have an open session)
- Delete the folder .kde4 (by using tty0-6)
- log in again

Well, (my) comment #10 does not solve the problem completely. But now it happens on my system only after long sessions (> 1 hour)

Not sure if it helps, but here is the output from plasma-desktop during the last log out (crashed after a session of about one hour):

Are you making progress, or is the recommendation to go back to KDE3?
I said, "3" because I was told the only way to fix the 4.6 problems was
to go to 4.7.  That's not working either and I'm not seeing evidence of

The applications in the taskbar were ignoring the row settings row settings. An invisible row was pushing the applications on another line (even though it was configured to use a single line only). Adding/removing more rows didn't remove the empty line occupying the taskbar.

~250 of my KDE 4.7.1 desktops (~70% of installs) are seeing these crashes at KDE logout/restart.

All share similar symptoms.  At this stage, I can guarantee only that users are doing different things right before they logout.

Several of the boxes that I've checked have virtually identical crash reports:

After some test I managed to write a step-by-step guide to reproduce this crash.


Tested environment and notes:

KDE SC 4.7.1 
on ArchLinux
Tested on 20110929
kdebase-workspace 4.7.1-6 (some applied patches can be accessed at http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/tree/trunk?h=packages/kdebase-workspace)

Note: I could also reproduce the crash using some days-old trunk build ("(4.7.41 (KDE 4.8 >= 20110807)")

We will be using a clean user account

Note about taskbar items entry default behavior (using the KDE default configuration):
* Taskbar grouping is enabled
* Grouping is only done when the taskbar is full
* Grouping is set by program name
Due to another issue, grouping doesn't get enabled for our testcase if we only disable the "only when taskbar is full" option, we need to change the "Grouping" option two times (it will be explained later)

Other notes:
* Desktop compositing is enabled here by default
* There is a Dolphin launcher in the taskbar, I will be using it to launch it (it will be my test application)

Steps and observed behavior:
----------

- Create new user account or cleanup any KDE configuration

- Start clean user account with KDE Workspaces

We now need to configure taskbar entries grouping:
- Right click on taskbar and select "Task Manager settings"
- On "Grouping" select "Do not group"
- Click "Apply". Do not close the dialog yet.
- On "Grouping" now select "By Program Name"
- Uncheck "Only when the taskbar is full"
- Click "Apply"
- Click "OK"
Grouping setting should now work to reproduce the crash

- Start Dolphin
A Dolphin window appears
- Press Ctrl+N to get one extra window
A second Dolphin window appears
- Press Ctrl+N again to get one extra window 
You have 3 Dolphin windows, grouped into one taskbar entry (named "Dolphin    3")

- Left click the "Dolphin    3" entry in the taskbar
A small plasmoid list will appear showing three rows, one for each Dolphin window
- Right click the bottom row (which has a label "Dolphin <some number>", probably "Dolphin <2>")
A popup menu will appear for that entry
- Select "Close"
That Dolphin window is closed
The small list will now show only two rows. Also, it is not connected anymore to the taskbar (it looks like a floating window). 
- Left click the "Dolphin    2" entry in the taskbar to close the small list.
The small list will be closed.
- Right click the "Dolphin     2" entry in the taskbar
A popup menu will appear for the group entry
- Select "Close"
All the Dolphin windows left (2) will be closed at the same time

- Quit Plasma (execute "kquitapp plasma-desktop" on KRunner or Konsole)
Plasma will crash with the mentioned backtrace

Note: sometimes DrKonqi won't appear, but Plasma is automatically restarted after the kquitapp call, and that means it crashed.

Fix a deletion of invalid pointer

I think that I've discovered the error. It's a deletion of invalid pointer.
Try the patch I've sent and reply the post.

I tried the patch on KDE/4.7 branch. no crashes so far. I will report if I get a crash again.

The function TaskGroupItem::tasksLayout() creates the instance:

m_tasksLayout = new TaskItemLayout(this, m_applet);

In all calls to tasksLayout(), the created layout is added to a QGraphicsLinearLayout like this:

m_offscreenLayout->addItem(tasksLayout());

And the QGraphicsLinearLayout is added to a QGraphicsWidget:

m_offscreenWidget->setLayout(m_offscreenLayout);

So the QGraphicsWidget is responsible for deletion of the instance as it is the parent of m_offscreenLayout.

So, it is unnecessary to delete m_tasksLayout. As Christoph said, it is a double-deletion issue.

The new patch removes the deletion. Everybody try it and reply the result.

The patch is against the commit of Christoph. If anybody used the patch I sent before, remove anything in TaskGroupItem::~TaskGroupItem() function instead applying the patch.

Deleting it again, causes a crash.

A temporary hack suggestion: When a shutdown is requested (Ctl-Alt-Shift-Down), signal your process monitor that the system is being shut down.  In the event of a crash, instead of re-starting KDE and firing up the report-a-bug program, just call exec, a la:
  execl("/sbin/init", "0", NULL);
You likely have enough bug reports.  Disable this once you have a real fix.
Thank you.

There is no need for intermediate fixes as this has been properly fixed for a while by now, just look at the bug status. For some reason the fix doesn't get shoved to the distros, therefore we still see bug reports from Ubuntu and SuSe. It feels like distros want to display KDE in the worst possible light (and KDE doesn't miss a chance to help them).

Kubuntu has KDE 4.7.4 in their ppa.

- What I was doing when the application crashed:
I selected Shutdown from the menu and while the system was shutting down I closed the laptop.
My laptop did not turn off and when I opened it again there was I dialog box reporting a segfault.

This only happens when I close the laptop while the system is shutting down. When I leave the laptop open, shutting down proceeds normally and the laptop turns itself off.

Now I see that the problem happened to a few months ago, and is marked as resolved. I do not know why, because it happens very often when I log off or shutdown the computer.
Weird :-/.

The bug is fixed in version 4.7.4, while you are still using 4.7.2. Nothing weird.

Please upgrade your installation, this is fixed in KDE 4.7.4 already as the bug information tells you.

- What I was doing when the application crashed:

Shutting down my computer. The problem is intermittend but 9 out off 10 shutdowns end in this crash!

i have debian wheezy with kde 4.8.4 and problem is still there.. Plasma crashes even when i give kquitapp plasma-desktop.
I find it really annoying..

Alex, please add backtrace, it is most likely a different crash.

Alex, your crash is caused by a third-party Python widget. Please remove widgets in turn to find out which one causes it.

There is a problem with the X-Window.  The memory is needed to get all information from the panel as needed.

Plasma Desktop Crash Report on shutdown

There is a power problem with the way the things are when you need the many directions from the memory checker that figurines the memory for the standard to be used by all memory checkers!?  Any questions?  LOL!
