Description Mark Fraser 2011-06-09 13:23:09 UTC
Version: 2.16 (using KDE 4.6.3)
OS: Linux

If I try to open a .deb I get a window pop up saying:
Ark was unable to determine the archive type of the filename.
Please choose the correct archive type below.

If I then click on the correct type it opens the archive.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Right click on .deb file, select open with Ark.

Expected Results:
.deb file opened correctly in Ark.

I can not reproduce this issue using kubuntu 10.10 with kde 4.6.2 and branch kde 4.6.3 compiled from sources.

Do you have application -> x-deb in System Settings -> Filetypes with Filename pattern=*.deb and Ark associated with this file type?
Comment 2 Mark Fraser 2011-06-11 10:56:56 UTC
Yes that is what I have set up. In Kubuntu 10.10 with KDE 4.5.5 it was working, now in Kubuntu 11.04 with KDE 4.6.3 it is not.

Using ark with a default installation of natty 11.04 / kde 4.6.2 / ark 2.16 in a virtual machine to open a *deb file I get the error dialog you reported as well, but there is no item "Debian package" in the list of archive types here. I have no idea what ubuntu package provides this item :(

I just downloaded the amd64 ark package from http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/ark and tried to open it with Ark itself and it worked (on FreeBSD).

This looks like a packaging problem, as both the Debian and the Ubuntu 4.6.{2,3} packages seem to be lacking the kerfuffle_libarchive_readonly.desktop file -- the same bug can probably be reproduced if you try to open an ISO image or a cpio archive.

Could any of you Ubuntu/Debian users try to contact your distribution and make sure it is not their fault?

For now, I'm closing this as a DOWNSTREAM problem, but will certainly reopen if this is not the case. Thank you.

Indeed it is a DOWNSTREAM problem, my virtual machine with natty 11.04 does not have the file kerfuffle_libarchive_readonly.desktop.
This file is in the package filelight -> packaging bug.

@ Mark Fraser: As workaround please install the package fillight.

Do you mean the package filelight as I can't seem to find fillight?

Yes.
