Description Volker Kuhlmann 2011-05-20 23:17:59 UTC
Version: 4.0 (using KDE 4.6.0)
OS: Linux

Default desktop folder, folder view desktop (= ~/Desktop directory).

Icons are placed anywhere regardless of constraints, and are jumbled all over the place any time the desktop font is changed, or any time some other events occur, like (I think) the desktop directory contents change.

This happens regardless of whether icons are locked in place, or whether they are aligned to grid. Icon sorting is turned off. Widgets are locked. For some folders that icon jumble might be acceptable, but for desktop icons it is definitely not. Those I expect to be in the position I put them.

This is the lousiest icon placement strategy I have seen in almost 20 years of desktop icons and I'll axe the folder view widget until it's usable.

Pls let me know if I have reported against the wrong KDE part/product/whatnot - thanks. It's impossible to keep track. :-(

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Default desktop folder view.
Align to grid - or don't.
Lock icons in place - or don't.
Turn icon sorting off - or don't.
System settings -> app appearance -> fonts, desktop, change size.

Actual Results:
Icons are jumbled into any position as soon as any parameter affecting icon position changes.

Expected Results:
Icons keep the same position relative to each other, but exact position may change when icon size or font changes. Icons keep exactly the same position when I say so (fixed icon position). This all for both aligned and no-aligned to grid.

(sorry it's all pre-filled with good detail when starting from help->report bug, but can't get/put the detail when starting a new report.)

And of course when getting rid of the folder view window and putting the icons directly on the desktop, the same folder view stuff is used too. :-((

Sorry, this is unusable. 'doze since 95 at the latest could do better than this. It's disappointing. It's a big step backwards from KDE 3 too.

Sure icons stay aligned, but they keep on swapping position with each other randomly and completely. I expect them to keep their position relative to each other within the alignment grid (and outside the grid, when that is turned off).

Sorry, nowhere near fixed.
