Description Alexey Chernov 2011-05-14 12:29:13 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.6.1)
OS: Linux

Looking for an option "Drag windows from all empty areas" I've eventually found that the window content of oxygen-settings window slightly differs from one in systemsettings (it lives somewhere in Application Appearance - Widget Style - Configure...). In my case the option exists in oxygen-settings and doesn't exist in systemsettings.

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Christoph Feck 2011-05-14 15:30:19 UTC
The difference is intentional, but that probably should be reconsidered.

People that want customization have never complained about too many options, so hiding extra settings in a different application (instead of just in a different tab) is both unconvenient and unconvential.
Comment 2 Alexey Chernov 2011-05-16 08:39:35 UTC
I agree, especially given that this page is so deep inside system settings.
Comment 3 Hugo Pereira Da Costa 2011-05-17 10:47:35 UTC
The differences between the two is indeed intentional, and motivated by the fact that we believe many of the options (such as "caching" mode, "use window manager to perform windows drag", as well as all the animations fine tuning), should simply not be exposed to normal users.

Now, the actual separation between what should and should not be exposed to users is still debated, and might well require more fine tuning.

Still, the differences will remain: if I remember right, a number of people do complain that kde as a whole has too many options. Having multiple carefully crafted levels of customizability is a good compromise, IMO.

So closing as invalid, Sorry.

No problem, but I have two ideas on that:
1. If it's still being fine tuned I think this exact option is a good candidate to be moved to system settings. Not only because of big discussion in kde mailing-list but also as some important option.
2. I didn't know about oxygen-settings at all until I read of it in the discussion mentioned above. I thought I can't disable this option before that. So, maybe it's worth to make these special settings visible somewhere? For example, move them to separate dialog in system settings which opens on 'Advanced settings' button. Or make some 'Advanced settings' group in KDE menu with all these *-settings programs.

Anyway, thanks for description.

About 1. I just committed the mentioned change. So obviously, we're on the same page :)

About 2. I agree too, actually sent a mail some time ago to ask for advice about how to make oxygen-settings "more" accessible, but still "less accessible" than the basic settings, and unfortunately have not found a satisfying solution yet.

So I'm still thinking.

(Concerning the "advance" button there are unfortunately technical difficulties at implementing it, though I also agree this might be the right way to go. As for adding "oxygen-settings" to some menu category, that was the subject line of the email I sent).

Oh, thank you very much! I hope we can see some improvements in the next releases soon.
Comment 7 Hugo Pereira Da Costa 2011-09-22 13:22:48 UTC
configuration windows (for both the decoration and the style), when running from systemsettings, now have "advanced" buttons which, when pressed makes the contents identical to what's in oxygen-settings. I think that fixes this bug.

Thanks for reporting,

Hugo

Great. Thanks for the fix!
