Description John Wheaton 2011-05-12 17:14:15 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.3)
OS: Linux

Messages received in Gmail have strangely missing line breaks when sent through Kmail. (FWIW, I tried opening a bug in KMail and that is closed... so I'm starting here.)

Basically, if I write a message like this:
---
Hello,

My name is John.

Nice to meet you.
__
John
---

It comes out like this:
---
Hello,
My name is John.
Nice to meet you.
__
John
---

I have tried a number of settings changes to my messages to see if that will help but it does not. This is particularly troublesome with long emails as it mashes things together. I have tried adding more new lines in my message, but they seem to get stripped. What's up with that?

Reproducible: Always

Works as expected with GMail and your example. Please save your sent message (file/save as..) and attach it to this report.

I have attached the file I sent myself. I composed it in kontact/kmail and viewed it in Gmail (online). Here is the difference I see.

What I wrote, saved, and is in my Sent folder in kmail:
--- --- ---
This is a test message I am writing to myself. I am trying to find words to fill up this paragraph so it wraps a bit. I don't really like lorem ipsum generators -- so boring. But I have a knack for finding anything to blabber on about. Perhaps I could be the culprit in a Holmes mystery where the pages I write on a full of gibberish but made of gold.

So this paragraph should have a blank line above it. it should not be directly touching the immediately preceding paragraph. Of course, with my luck, something will work right and prove me wrong.

I have TWO blank lines above this one to show another example.

I hope this helps diagnose the issue. FWIW, this paragraph has ONE blank line above it.

I looked at the saved mbox file and it has a lot of html cruft in it. The styling seems completely wacky and overloaded. Can that be simplified a bit?

I will attach the mbox file momentarily.

GMail rendering with your test message

Whatever the cause is, the issue cannot be reproduced with KMail2. The bug will be fixed in kdepim 4.6.

Marking as Resolved.

I have been able to use KDE 4.6 in a VM of Kubuntu 11.04 and I can confirm this is fixed. (Kontact 4.4.10 and KMail 1.13.6 v. 4.4.8 and 1.13.5 in my daily environment.)

Thank you sooooooooo much to whoever fixed this!!!!!! This was a hugely annoying problem and I look forward to updating my daily environment so I can rid myself of this annoyance!

Very cool.
