Update Removing PulseAudio seems to solve the problem Still it'd be nice to have option to ignore PulseAudio in KMIX settings or in SystemSettings, or to have a hint that the different tab layout in KMIX is related to PulseAudio :) Plz change this bug to Wishlist
Same here in Kubuntu 11.4. used workaround of including export KMIX_PULSEAUDIO_DISABLE in .bashrc. Don't know if it's an user, distirbution or KDE problem as there are some reports commenting PulseAudio should be supported but found no wayof fixing it.
It's a decision of the distribution to use Pulseaudio as default or not. Same goes to shipping their distribution with the OSSv4 driver. They should document it. Please refer to your distribution documentation/Website/Wiki. Closing as INVALID. Future directions: In future versions (possibly already KDE4.8) it is planned to allow the user to select its preferred backend from the KMix GUI.
