Description Jeffrey 2011-04-23 16:54:15 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.5)
OS: Linux

I have my photos, music, etc shared on my network from one linux computer. When connecting from another linux computer (over wireless-g) I can run in Konsole 'ls /home/user/shared/photos/' and instantly see my files. When I try to browse there in Dolphin, the computer slows down and doesn't even show that there may possibly be files for a long time (minutes), before slowly starting to show the directories and files.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Share files across network. Try to browse, and it takes far too long.

Actual Results:
having samba-mounted folders show up in Dolphin (needed before I can browse) takes a long time. Currently it seems that perhaps the mounted directory isn't working, the mount is broken, the permissions are wrong, or who knows what else. When it takes a long time for these files and folders to appear, casual users don't know where else to look (i.e., 'ls' at commandline) and assume either the share is broken or KDE/Linux isn't working or is too hard to use

Expected Results:
Dolphin shold be able to show generic folder icons, image icons, music icons, general icons very quickly after browsing to a network-shared location

command-line 'ls' shows these files quickly, so the data is available to KDE; it seems that Dolphin wants to get all of the data (files, names, sizes, dates, etc) before starting to display any of it. The files and folders should start appearing instantly so that users know that things are happening.

I've replaced my wireless network hardware and everything is much better, so my bug report is invalid and I apologize for not researching enough.

thanks for KDE!
