Description Richard Hartmann 2011-04-19 15:05:27 UTC
Version: 1.13.6 (using KDE 4.6.1)
OS: Linux

When I press ctrl-a, select all, while focus in in the message text display subwindow, all emails in the message _list_ above are selected.

Selecting a few thousand messages takes quite a bit of time which the user might try pressing other buttons. While pressing Del in this situation is not very likely, this is a potential disaster waiting to happen.

I have no idea if this will be fixed with the new KDE PIM suite anyway, but I think it's way too dangerous an issue not to file to file this bug, anyway.

Filing as major as this can potentially destroy data. If you disagree, feel free to re-adjust. I simply wanted to default to safety and make sure this is seen.

Reproducible: Always

OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.38-2-686
Compiler: gcc

Looking at the Edit menu, I see "Ctrl+T" for "Select All Text", and "Ctrl+A" for "Select All Messages". If you want to swap the shortcuts, or assign other keys, you can change them.

indeed. Not a bug.
Comment 3 Richard Hartmann 2011-04-19 15:35:00 UTC
TTBOMK, ctrl-a has always been focus-sensitive. At the very least since KDE 2.x. Changing this behaviour is a not a good idea, imo.
At the very least, this should be go through the usability team. If this happened and I didn't notice, then I'm sorry.

Given the fact that this can actually lead to data loss, it's even more important not to change this behaviour without _very_ good reason, imo.

I won't re-open the bug just so we can play back and forth, but I would appreciate an answer as to the actual _need_ to change this ancient behaviour.

If you prefer the KDE mailing lists instead of this bug, that's fine, too.

Bug 219662 acutally has many duplicates, i.e. people complained that Ctrl+A did NOT select all messages.
