Description Jacob R 2011-03-30 09:13:28 UTC
Version: unspecified (using Devel)
OS: Linux

The auto track feature in KTimeTracker should be extended from tracking desktops to tracking activities.

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Thorsten Staerk 2011-04-02 22:10:32 UTC
Have that,
Clock -> Track active Applications or so
Comment 2 Jacob R 2011-04-03 20:50:51 UTC
KDE Activities are not the same as Active applications nor Desktops, or did I misunderstand?
Comment 3 Thorsten Staerk 2011-04-04 05:05:39 UTC
ok, so what are KDE activities?
Comment 4 Jacob R 2011-04-05 20:48:28 UTC
It's kind of like virtual desktops, but actually a concept which works better with KTimeTracker. More info at http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma#Activities http://hanschen.org/2009/11/17/how-do-you-use-activities/ http://hanschen.org/2011/02/04/activities-a-change-in-workflow/
Comment 5 Stuart Laughlin 2011-05-23 20:31:20 UTC
Please reopen this bug (or would you prefer I create a new one?). As Jacob notes, KDE Activities have nothing to do with active applications or desktops.
Comment 6 Clément Schreiner 2011-08-01 18:00:48 UTC
I also would like to see this bug reopened; as said above, activities have nothing to do with "active applications". Since there is an option to track virtual desktops, there should be one for activites too.
Comment 7 Thorsten Staerk 2011-08-02 20:41:07 UTC
I am happy to reopen this bug as long as we have a responsible person <> me. Would you volunteer? You would have as much time as you want, just some kind of a responsibility to keep after it.
Comment 8 Clément Schreiner 2011-08-03 18:44:21 UTC
I've had in mind to contribute to KDE projects for some time now, but my experience
in Qt/KDE developement or C++ is near zero, and I can't guarantee anything;
certainly not in the coming weeks. If you find that insufficient to open the bug,
which I would totally understand, it won't keep me from trying to write a patch
anyway when I find the time and motivation, someday.
However, I'm just curious, would that take too much time to implement, or do
you simply have no interest in adding a feature you have no use for?

(a) I don't have interest in this feature
(b) I am searching for contributors. Programming together is fun!

In September I have no work, in October I have. Let's get together and program this.

assigning bug to Clemens

The KDEPIM team is meeting in Osnabrueck this weekend. Yesterday we had a discussion about activities and I find this concept absolutely fits to ktimetracker. I just have the problem that we are bloating the UI: First we had auto-tracking by desktop, then auto-tracking by running application. Now I do not want to introduce a third option that largely overlaps with virtual desktops. Ideas?

Another possibility would be to still track active programs, but group them according to activities...
Comment 17 Johannes Jordan 2013-10-04 06:58:23 UTC
Yes, but you have to be careful as you can run the same program in different activities.
Examples:
 - konsole you find pretty often on several desktops/activities concurrently
 - I use kate -n to run several kate sessions in different activities

Implementation of this single feature would probably make both much more essential for KDE. As a developer and freelancer I could just create diffrent activities for each of my clients and track time spent on working for them without any additional steps and still have the possibility to organize my programs into serveral virtual desktops.

I believe this should not only be implemented for activities, but also tracking based on desktops could be removed from KTimeTracker.
Comment 20 naraesk 2013-12-20 01:17:58 UTC
I'd like to see this feature as well. There are modules for activities. They are logging already, when activities are started and stopped.
Comment 21 Konrad Renner 2014-09-26 11:45:17 UTC
+1 for this feature ;-)
Comment 22 naraesk 2015-02-13 18:42:12 UTC
any news? :)
Comment 23 Thorsten Staerk 2015-02-15 14:03:34 UTC
still the same status - provide a patch that works and I can push it
Comment 24 Thorsten Staerk 2015-02-15 14:04:04 UTC
in other words I am not sold on writing this

I am using KTimeTracker with Unity. Please don't remove tracking based on desktops!

Hello! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this project has been unmaintained for many years so I will be closing this bug.
