Description arne anka 2011-03-20 22:29:54 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.3)
OS: Linux

i got a netbook which does not and unbder any circumstances use akonadi!
the only application installed and used, that remotely might be related to akonadi, is kopete -- and that runs very well without.

nevertheless, i am forced to install akonadi and it's seemingly impossible to get either rid of it or at least stop it from running and thus using up valuable resources i have better usesd for than a framework i never touch.

i fail to understand, why a functionality not being vital (neither a semantic desktop nor address/calendar management are necessary to running kde) is forced upon users w/o any means to get rid of them.

i wrote a script that mercyless akonadi, nepomuk and all those creeps whenever they attempt to rear their heads and it doesn't make my system unstable or unusable -- there may be a lot of people finding akonadi usefull, but there are probably as many who think it to be a waste of resources.

please, identify those apps _really_ needing akonadi (are there any more than kdepim?) amd limit the dependencies to those only.

Reproducible: Always

Is anyone monitoring this bug? Can it be changed from Unconfirmed to Wishlist?

I personally avoid using programs that start Akonadi because it is too resource intensive. I like KDE and the Plasma Desktop. I would like to use KDE programs, but I refuse to use them if the automatically start Akonadi. I instead have to find alternative programs; that sometimes means installing programs that are ugly because they use GTK or depend on Gnome libraries.

It would be great if it could be converted to an add-on or plug-in that could be called by any compliant program once it becomes less resource intensive. For now, it would be great if a preference could be added that could tell a program not to start or use Akonadi.

Another name for additional title for this could be:

Add Preference to Make Akonadi Optional for Programs That Use It

or in total:

Remove Akonadi Dependencies and Add Preference to Make Akonadi Optional for Programs That Use It

Akonadi is started only when there's some component or application that needs it. That means most KDE PIM apps, a KRunner plugin and Calendar Widget on Plasma Desktop. Solution is not to use KDE PIM (you can uninstall it), disable the KRunner plugin and disable Akonadi integration in the Calendar Widget (it's enabled by default, but there's a checkbox for that)

There are some more applets that depend on Akonadi, like Akonotes, but they are useless without Akonadi integration. There are no plans to make Akonadi optional for KDE PIM.
