Description schussma 2001-06-07 02:55:37 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kcmlayout
Version: 2.0 (using KDE 2.1.1 )
Severity: normal
Installed from: Red Hat Linux 7.0
Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-79)
OS: Linux 2.2.17-8smp i686
OS/Compiler notes:

In the Keyboard layout in Control Center

I can't specify that I want to use ctrl + shift to
switch to the next layout.

I go to Personalization:Keyboard layout:Shortcut
click on the "Select next keyboard layout" field
click on "Custom key" which defaults to
shift (not checked)
ctrl (checked)
alt (checked)
box: (K)

I uncheck the "Alt" click on the box and hit
the right shift key. This causes "Shift" to
appear in the box and causes "Ctrl+Shift" to appear
in the "Current key" text field to the right of
the "Select next keyboard layout".

So far everything seems reasonable. However when
I click "Apply" it has no effect.

when I close the control center and re-open it and
go back into the keyboard layout and click on the
"select next keyboard layout" action things are
different:

the "Custom key" radio button is still checked. But
now the "Shift" box is checked and the box on the
right is empty and there is no text to the right
of the "Select next keyboard layout" in the "Current
Key" column.

Anyhow... That's the bug.

Now for the wish list:

Is there a way to specify that exactly the left or
right shift/ctrl/alt key is pressed? Some other
things like to use the ctrl-shift-something combo
and it would be nice to allow the left ctrl and
left shift to do that while the right ctrl and
right shift are used to select the next keyboard.

This seems to have broken since the previous version
of control center so perhaps that's another bug
and not just a wish.

Thanks.

Greg

The shortcut key for changing the keyboard layout is now under a different entry in
the KDE Control Center. I'm considering this bug fixed since the code has been
merged with all the other shortcut and accelerators for all applications throughout
KDE.

Now I can choose Ctrl+Shift as layout switcher by check "Left Shift changes group" on XkbOption tab. But there are two annoying problem:

1. I cannot use "R-Alt switches group while pressed" at all even it's checked.

2. Now I cannot use left Shift for change case for typed letter.

3. I cannot restore and activate in this dialog default xkb settings.

When you make correct keyboard layout switcher like Gnome one?

Is this bug still present in a recent version of KDE, such as 3.5.8?
