I reported https://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-20773 which would not fix the issue, but at least improve the situation a bit.

Forget comment #7. The issue seems to be that instead of clicking on the Kickoff items, you are indeed actually dragging them.

If you are using an input device where clicking without dragging is next to impossible (e.g. a stylus), you might need to increase the "drag distance". You can change it with "kcmshell4 mouse" > "Advanced" Tab.

It happened now also on KDE 4.7.90 (4.8.0 beta2) and Qt 4.7.4.
I wasn't able to reproduce it until now, but I still know exactly what I did before it crashed:

→ Rightclicked on the desktop
→ "Add Widget"
→ Filtered the widget list for "list"
→ Dragged & dropped "Event List" to the desktop
→ Dragged & dropped "Event List" to the main panel
→ plasma-desktop crashed

Hello!

This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug is already resolved in Plasma 5.
