several seconds post fresh rebooting 11.3 i pressed alt-f1 & typed into dialog search keyword 'default' & found 'default applications' which i then chose via down-arrow key & pressed enter to run it; instant it ran this crash was produced.

- What is your "libdbus" version ? 
If it is 1.2.x then this is bug 241594; a libdbus bug fixed in the 1.3.1 version and later.

my opensuse 11.3's installation re your ref to libdbus versions shows me NO VERSION INSTALLED AT ALL?:

If it is 1.2.x then this is bug 241594; a libdbus bug fixed in the 1.3.1

The package name depends on the distribution. In your case the package should be named "dbus" (or "dbus-core") I guess. Try with that name.
