Sketch for example

Version: 0.12 (using KDE 4.6.0)
OS: Linux

Okular is amazing tool for reading. He have bookmarks, annotations, etc.
IMHO, only thing is missing is tool to manage(list) needed (frequently used/ favourite/ bookmarked) documents.

Use case:
1. You study and have a lot of pdf/epub books, that you read frequently. In this case "recent documents" list is too short.
2. You have few important documents, that you open occasionally. Adding them to "Library list" will save you time for searching them on disk.

So adding this feature can help to save a huge ammount of time and provide convenience.

As far as i understand, creating "library manager" isn't goal of Okular. But this feature can be achieved without program complication.
Adding options "add document to list" and "show list", will help to find fast needed/ frequently used documents.

In sketch for example, button "Library" open list of bookmarked documents. Okular just store list of documents urls and show it. Clicking on list entry, opens document.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Alternatively the currently empty home screen when starting Okular without a specified file could be used to display the most recent / most commonly accessed PDF documents. I am thinking of something akin to most web browser's "new tab" page.

Fest:
Thanks for your thoughts and the sketch. I feel this workflow issue (i.e. adding a second type of favorites in addition to regular bookmarks) is not really specific for Okular, you could argue similarly for nearly every application and eventually even think about a new meta-library-manager.

However, this new application already exists and is called Dolphin, i.e. there you have the option to create a "Favorites" folder and add (static) symlinks to documents (of any type, not only PDF) as you wish. I believe with Baloo there is also the possibility to (dynamically) list frequently used documents (but maybe this could work better with grouping by filetype/author etc.?).

Note that Windows Explorer also has a feature called "Library", not sure how that works but could be worth studying in detail and opening feature requests for Dolphin for the nice parts we are still missing.

Florian:
I like your alternative suggestion to improve the empty start screen, as this adds some of the library feature without adding clutter to the rest of the UI. Let's make the bug (or rather feature request) about this.

We could also look at Gwenview, LibreOffice and Firefox regarding ideas. But also adding unique features might be useful, e.g. sorting by author or a search-as-you-type drill-down list.

Xodo PDF Viewer on Android has this favourites feature and I love it on my 10" Android tablet which I use to study/research, but it's no match for my 15" screen laptop with KDE, so I want this feature on Okular as well.

There are some files that I have to open very frequently and as the OP said, the “recent documents” list just goes by recency and not frequency, and anyhow I want to determine what my favourites are, like in browser bookmarks.

Relegating this to Dolphin isn't satisfactory because I want Okular-specific bookmarks to appear in Okular. Dolphin is a generic file manager.

Just noting in passing that this bug is almost 9 years old. Please do implement this!
