Description Danishka Navin 2011-02-18 18:26:43 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.4)
OS: Linux

I can find totally wrong spellings for all location names for my country, Sri Lanka.

This is a critical issue.
I can help to revert all location names with correct names.

We must fix this ASAP

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Open Marble
search for Sri Lanka
 79° 54' 13.1"E, 6° 55' 03.4"N

Actual Results:
Capital City named as "Kolamba"

Expected Results:
Capital of Sri Lanka is "Colombo"

OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64
Compiler: gcc

we could not introduce this package to the community as the text is unacceptable.
Comment 2 Burkhard Lück 2011-02-19 14:00:17 UTC
Using Marble 1.0.0 in KDE 4.6.0 compiled from sources and in Kubuntu 10.10 the capital of Sri Lanka is correctly named Colombo.

Entering "Kolamba" in the search field of the navigation bar gives no hit, there is no city named "Kolamba" in marble/data.

Seems you use Fedora 14, it must be a distribution fault then.

i am using Fedora 14

is it possible to get a list of city names belongs to Sri Lanka?

i selected Colombo as an example.
Comment 4 Dennis Nienhüser 2011-02-19 17:13:53 UTC
We updated the list of cities for KDE 4.6 (Marble 1.0). I compared both: Kolamba in KDE 4.5 (Marble 0.10) has been renamed Colombo in KDE 4.6.
Comment 5 Danishka Navin 2011-02-19 17:21:57 UTC
what you meant?

Can you confirm that all locations in my country will appear with correct spellings?

I was not talking only about Colombo but all the city names
Comment 6 Dennis Nienhüser 2011-02-19 17:39:39 UTC
I checked more than ten of them, they were all correct in the KDE 4.6 version according to Wikipedia. The data is imported automatically, so I assume that whichever error caused the wrong spelling (or rather the use of an uncommon alternative name) has been resolved.

Dennis,

Highly appreciate if you could send me a screenshot of the Sri Lanka Map in Marble ( KDE 4.6 ).

Can you ask the people at http://www.geonames.org/ to change that? We import their data and they call it Galkissa (seems to be the local name).

in Sinhala Galkissa is fine but in English its not correct :)

they have both

http://www.geonames.org/search.html?q=mount+lavinia&country=LK
Comment 13 Dennis Nienhüser 2011-02-19 18:35:22 UTC
The reason that Galkissa turns up in Marble and Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia not is that geonames has a population for the former, but not the latter. I know too little about the local facts to judge what is correct.

ok thanks :)
