Description Jani-Matti Hätinen 2011-02-17 22:12:26 UTC
Version: 2.0.x (using KDE 4.6.0)
OS: Linux

Dragon Player violates the KDE HIG by not showing the name of the opened file/disk in the window title.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Dragon Player
2. Open any file or disk with it

Actual Results:
The window title doesn't change

Expected Results:
Window title should change to the form:
Name of the opened file/disk - Dragon Player

Where is that defined?
Comment 2 Jani-Matti Hätinen 2012-10-04 09:08:40 UTC
Seems that the current state of the HIG is a bit lacking. Anyway. Every other video player on the Linux desktop follows this window labeling style and for a good reason. Omitting the actual content from the window label is really uninformative.

Currently, if you pause a video in Dragon Player, the name of the file/disc being played isn't displayed anywhere on the UI. IMHO this is simply silly

Doesn't seem to be a bug but more like a design decision.

But on the other hand Kaffeine and KMplayer are able to show current media on their respective title bars.

A quick look on Multimedia on kde.org show that Elisa doesn't do it but Amarok and Juk do.

It could be great if dragon player could do it along the status bar as an option along the rest.
Comment 7 Jani-Matti Hätinen 2019-02-14 09:49:10 UTC
It is a horrible, horrible 'design decision' though. It elevates the application name as the main information above the content displayed, which is always wrong. No user cares one bit that Dragon player happens to be the piece of software that is playing their video file (unless of course they discover a bug in the application), they only care about the content being displayed.

This problem is especially egrecious if one tries to use Dragon Player to play different video clips as part of video editing workflow. Because there's no way to see which file is playing in which window when the files are paused, Dragon Player is utterly useless in this use case simply due to this bug.

Status bar does nothing in this case, because it won't show up in the task manager.

This would get us one step closer to being able to permanently remove the status bar; see Bug 461386.

Git commit cf06dcb728d24fd5491382a5a28b3a6e0f70168e by Harald Sitter.
Committed on 29/11/2022 at 10:08.
Pushed by sitter into branch 'master'.

use the window title for title display rather than the statusbar

this gets us closer to getting rid of the bar entirely
