Description kderror.3.dirnsa 2011-02-16 17:53:00 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.4)
OS: MS Windows

After much reading and deliberation, installed latest stable release this morning from columbia.edu mirror, using installer, on a win7 home edition box. Selected full install of all packages/binaries. Comodo firewall (5.3.17)threw lots of warnings during install - clicked through. Went OK. (Konquerer crashed within first 5 min, but no biggie. Kigo failed due to lack of back-end, whatever.) Was still going to keep install.
Then found that windows explorer was behaving oddly. Minimized windows did not appear on the taskbar as usual, but floating above it on the desktop, such that the buttons could not be accessed nor selected when any app was maximized. Furthermore, the start menu no longer appeared by hovering the cursor over the start button, but now had to be clicked (problem since such clicking launches Classic Shell 2.9.2 on my machine, which I don't always want). Found no settings to adjust.
Researched symptoms online, found virus warnings, opted for win7 system restore which wiped kde off my machine. Everything works properly again. Whew!

Reproducible: Didn't try

While the problem did not itself cause data loss as far as I know, it did require a system restore to restore normal functionality, which caused the loss of kde itself, and who knows what else. Too bad, I had hoped kde was ready for "prime time". Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Perhaps I'll give it another chance in a few more years.

That is a bug after the crash of certain applications which leaves some explorer shell hooks broken. I know why it happens, but I have no good idea yet how to solve that.
