I opened a larger project (> 1000 source files), in a workspace I have been working with before without problems.
I opend and modified a file (working about 10 minutes) and started my build process (via independed build script, not related to kdevelop).
During the build, kdevelop greyed out, not responding anymore, it seemed to be busy with parsing. Looked to me as if the build took to much CPU/Disk IO so kdevelop background parsers slowed down, leading to the greying out. Kdevelop came to color and live again after system load was down againl ( btw, this is a Quadcore, and not all cores where in use for most of the time, so I suppose it is Disk IO). A percentage counter in the lower right of the kdevelop screen advanced from 18% to 39%. Work was possible again. 
I modified code again, and on the next build, greying out and GUI block occured again.
After the build, kdevelop again came to live, but a second after that it crashed.
