Description turmoil78 2011-01-20 08:23:38 UTC
Version: 4.4 (using KDE 4.4.4)
OS: Linux

I had a Debian Lenny system and upgraded it from Lenny to Squeeze without getting any problem. But after the first reset of the system, system showed KDM properly. But, when I enter my user name and password, system resets itself. I also cannot pass console screens by pressing <ctrl + alt + Fx> keys at this state. If I power cycle the desktop PC and don't enter user name/pass at the KDM screen, then I can switch with <ctrl+alt+fx>. I tried to downgrade to lenny at this stage but nothing has changed. So; I had to install a clean Lenny system.

Yesterday, I tried to start my desktop PC with "kubuntu-10.10-dvd-i386.iso" image, same thing happens with that distribution also. I think there is incompability with my desktop and KDE 4.

P.S. I install both images at my other PC via "VirtualBox", they are both working fine...

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Start the system with KDE 4.

Actual Results:
I see KDM screen without any problem (no resolution problem etc.). When I enter my user name&password, it shows "KDE initialization" screen for just 2-3 seconds and then system goes back to KDM screen. I don't see any error reported at ctrl + alt + fx virtual consoles...

Some things you could check:

- $HOME/.xsession-errors should contain valuable information about the last action before the crash or other bug that leads to the log out

- Start with a new user account as it may be possible that some of the old configuration prevents a correct KDE start

- Start in "fail save" X11 mode (i.e. with only xterm as the "session"), and run "startkde" manually from this terminal so that you can see what happens during startup

Forgot the most important thing: It is possible that the video drivers don't properly handle the OpenGL acceleration that KWin tries to use, so you could change to "Enabled=false" in section [Compositing] in $HOME/.kde/share/config/kwinrc to check if this is really the issue.

Hello Christoph,

Sorry for the late reply.
I installed gnome to my PC and tried to re-install "kde-desktop" components if there is something missing.
Issue with my kde is still valid but I can use graphical desktop with gnome.

----------------

I created a new user, but issue remains same...

-----------

I tried to manually give startkde command. Is there any way to copy its output? It gave some information about some KDE folders and then it stopped...

I forgot to mention something about the "new user":

Same thing happens with Paul Bryan Roberts from url:
http://us.generation-nt.com/answer/bug-608129-kdm-kdm-login-kde-fails-after-upgrade-installlation-squeeze-beta-2-help-201632352.html

The KDM login screem appears (kdm_greet), I enter user id and password and press return. Screen goes blank, very briefly a white window appears in the top left of the screen, and then I find myself looking at the tty1 console login. The kdm_greet process is gone but kdm is still running. However the X session cannot be recovered.

Also,
when I give startkde command it says "Kaboom cannot connect to X Server"

Thanks
