Kopete has a filter bar for the contact list. It is automatically in the same row as the default toolbar. Since Kopete‘s contact list window is usually not very wide (and it is by default as well!) the search bar is always truncated or not visible at all.
You have to unlock toolbars and move it to another row to make it usable.
It should be in a second row by default.

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
